| Mike,
Remember, you need the SPECIAL multi-user license for the
workstation, not the standard VMS user licenses.
However, given this, I think a VAX-4000 Model 100 or VAX-3100 model
90 would be better for this purpose.
In regard to disk configuration, I'd put an RZ23L in for the system
disk, plus 2 RZ26s with a Volume Shadowing License for the MCC
subsystem. I tell customers that they can rebuild the system disk
easily, but would have a real problem re-creating all that data
they've collected.
In addition, you'll need at least 1 RRD42 for software installation
plus to keep the DECMCC docs on-line. If you want to keep all docs
on-line, you'll need 3 RRD42s.
I'd choose the non-workstation systems because they support more
memory, more disks (SCSI, DSSI), etc.

| We are currently testing DECmcc on a seed VAXstation 4000 Model 90. It
is quite fast (rated at 33 SPECmarks, 42 VUPS). We have 80 MB memory.
It supports 128 MB. It has a turbochannel ethernet controller that we
have rated at 9Mbps sustained on our LAN.
There are some problems with the current V5.5-2S4 version of VMS which
has given us some grief, so I would be a little uneasy about
recommending it to a customer until the bugs have been worked out.
As far as eXcursion is concerned, we tried using DECmcc to ship a
window to a 486 PC. There were problems with limited screen real
estate, plus the fact that windows didn't behave the way we expected.
For example, the DECmcc navigation window would not "collapse" with the
map window. The toolbox window did some strange things, too, as did
the pull down menus.
If I were you, I would stress test EVERYTHING as much as possible
before I sold the customer anything.
There are currently only 10 VAXstation 4000/90's. They are not
scheduled to go into production until mid- to late August. Once the
bugs are worked out, though, this will be a nice system.
I do recommend a minimum of 64 MB of memory in any VAX, especially if
you will be using it to serve windows.
For PCs, we noticed that it cost us 1MB of memory PER WINDOW SERVED to
support Pathworks nodes.
Also, if you have a bad network, your X-windows response time will be
affected.
Nothing beats a local display.
Regards,
Dan
