Suppose I install MCC on a new system, and than I want to move the data from another system that's running MCC to the new system. What files/db's do I have to copy? Can I do a straight copy of some MIR/DNS files or do I have to extract/import things? (This is for VMS) Thanks Timo

Other points of view are welcome. I did the exact same thing you want to do, however without DNS being involved. I simply copied the files that were different between the systems. This would include the MIR files, private icons, command procedures, etc. The only issues are the exporter RDB database (this needs as a minimum an RMU backup from the source system and an RMU restore on the destination system) and DNS. If your system is a DNS server, then I would *STRONGLY* recommend building a replica on the target system and re-mastering the clearinghouse(s) from the source system to the target and then removing the clearinghouse(s) from the original system (now a replica) at a later date. Another way (at least for the instance store) is to use NETS::USER$NETS:[DECMCC.S-KIT]MCC_DUMP_DNS.COM It will create registration scripts for all the registered entities and also scripts for re-creating the domains and adding the members. NETS::USER$NETS:[DECMCC.S-KIT]MCC_MOVE_MAPS.COM will copy the mapfiles and rename them to the transportable filename format so the new system can read them (note that there is a UID in the filename for mapfiles that is tied to the UID of the domain - new domains of the same name will have new UIDs). Hope this helps. s/rob |
