| A trend with MSU and now MCC is to allow applications relating to
management to be launched from the iconic map. In the Synoptics case,
this is a standalone application that is a 'control panel' for the
Synoptics equipment. When an alarm goes off saying your Synoptics has
a problem, you can then "launch" the specific application for that box.
Context is passed to the application, giving it the entity name, map
name, and domain name (this API being enhanced). This is not what EMA
calls integration, but is how HP now claims 118 vendors integrated with
OpenView - and what our customers seem to want in the summer of 1992.
Our hopes is that this trend becomes old as applications that have no
consistency create problems - and a toolbox of "control panel" widgets
that allow design for each device, and direct connections to the
management framework becomes the next wave. Digital can lead or follow
the trend to tighter integration - but for now, we're "integrating" any
vendors management application that runs on ULTRIX.

I have been asked by a customer on the MCC-Synoptics capabilities. Apparently
somebody mentioned at a network management seminar, that Synoptics would
offer their management application under VMS MCC as well.
Anybody having in-depth knowledge on the Synoptics offerings?
Specifically, is the application offered a peer of what
Synoptics is offering on the Sun workstation (Lattisview) or
is it the same application running on the HP OpenView platform?
The former gives more functionality (apparently), i.e. auto-topology, etc.
Thanks for all feedback

| Speaking as the 3rd party integration person for the Network Management
Applications group, I can say that Synoptics has shown no interest in
porting to VMS.
We have been very aggressive in forwarding to them all requests for
Lattis Views on VMS, but they remain uninterested to date. Please feel
free to make the request directly to them.
