3341.0. "How about SMP ?" by HOO78C::TURHAN () Sun Jul 12 1992 10:48

    Hi,

    A lot of steam is coming from the internet about secure SNMP and
    recently SMP.

    I started receiving questions about what we plan to do on SMP.
    Could someone explain what is (or will be) Digital's strategy about SMP.

    Thanks,

3341.1SMP (SNMP V2) - YESSKIBUM::GASSMANTue Jul 14 1992 12:3111
    Digital's strategy is to support the management of TCP/IP networks.
    The SMP protocol has some very nice features. Most or all of it will
    be probably accepted by the IAB/IETF, and become SNMP V2. As soon as
    the specs are made public, I would expect those involved in SNMP
    directors and agents to get the specs, and make plans to support the
    new features. It would not be against our strategy to adopt some of
    the features before final standardization by the IAB/IETF, however each
    product group would have to make decision based on what their customers
    ask for.

Bill is probably closer to things than I am but I am slightly less
optimistic than him about any rapid adoption of SMP. I would say, at least
for the CBN products, that we are tracking SMP (the documents are sitting in
my "really quite urgent but not as urgent as some things" pile of reading at
home) and if and when it becomes standardised or widely adopted we will
support it in our products.

The best line to take in public statements is to point out that Digital is
publicly committed to supporting management of TCP/IP networks using
industry standard protocols. If SMP (or some other SNMP V2) becomes widely
used we could hardly fail to support it!

By the way, although CBN is unlikely to drive the SMP process much, I can't
comment on whether any other Digital group will participate more actively.
