| One of the most interesting physical netmgt software I've seen is
the ISICAD software. They are currently working with OPENview and
Cabletron's Spectrum - and have expressed an interest at working with
Digital - but the interconnection of the two products must be system
engineered to be more than a launch - so working with them is probably
best left to service engineering. By the way, in a netmgt survey at
Spring Interop - cable routers and connections (patch-panels, cable
pairs, terminations) were listed as the top two things that "still need
to be managed". A system that has this kind of management will be seen
as more valuable to customers.

3260.2 | DECmcc-CABLE management tool | NSDC::CAILLE | | Mon Jun 29 1992 12:32 | 55 |
| RE:.0
The 'European Intelligent Building Services' will deliver soon a cable
management tool called "CABLEmanager", this tool includes the following
management modules:
o DICTIONARY
o BUILDING
o CABLING
o NETWORK
and some additional modules, which will be available later, such as
o PEOPLE
o EQUIPMENT ASSETS
o ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM
o MAINTENANCE
o etc...
a link between the NETWORK module and DECmcc is under development and
will provide the following main functionalities:
o Bi-directional Localization of Objects (for object classes common to
both systems: CABLEmanager and DECmcc). This functionality will allow
the user to highlight/notify an object on the Map of the CABLEmanager
based on a selection on the DECmcc Iconic Map window, and vice versa.
o Consistency Report Generation - this functionality will check that each
CABLEmanager network entity has been registered in DECmcc. The
registration of missing entities is not automaticaly executed. Actualy,
a registration script file will be produce, including all information
needed for entity registration, thus only the person in charge of
network management is able to accept/modify this registration script file
in order to process it.
o DECmcc Autonconfiguration -based on the CABLEmanager'topology
structure. This means that a collection of DECmcc domain will be created
respecting the topology of your CAMPUS/BUILDING structure definition.
Assume that your Company is composed of CAMPUSes. Each of them includes
several buildings containing many floors, etc... These domains will be
populated, according to CABLEmanager Network object definitions.
In this first Version, the LINK binds the Network objects, but the next
versions will also provide a bridge between modules such as Access
Control System, Lighting System, etc... and DECmcc.
Feel free to contact me if you need some more info.

Looong time ago, when I was involved in this cable management project , we
visited ISICAD in the UK and had a demo of their system. Personally , I was
more impressed by their system than the one that has finally been choosen.
(A package of which I don't remember the name, from a french company SIGET).
One of the major obstacles at that time (about 2.5 years ago), whas that the
ISICAD package was not running on VMS and that there were no confirmed plans
to port it from UNIX to VMS.
Too bad that they want to cooperate now with DEC, because our choice for the
other company has been made long time ago and development is in the end phase.
As mentioned in the previous note, one of the requirements of the cable
management package was an interface to DECmcc.
If you want more info , contact Terry Walsh @VBO.

| Hello Moshe,
Yes, it is.

3260.6 | DECMCC-OTHER APPLICATION FUNCTIONALITY | SNOFS1::MACKENZIE | | Mon Jul 13 1992 00:47 | 18 |
| The other wish lists for DECmcc in addition to .0 is the
availability of an integrated call logging/help desk
application access from decmmc.
It's one thing to get notified of an alarm via the NMS, but
usually one of the next things that has to happen, is that a
call has to be logged, or trouble ticket raised and assigned
or dispatched so somebody can go and fix the broken thing.
Also a tie into security management from DECmcc would be
nice.
Does anybody know how DEc is going to do this ? ,is DECmcc
going to be expanded to become all things to all people, or
are there going to be (EMA compliant, under Polycentre)
modular applications for help desk, security etc that can be
called by DECmcc.

3260.7 | any VMS solution? | ROM01::CANCELLIERI | perfezionista pentito | Wed Oct 21 1992 12:38 | 17 |
| We have a customer who wants to by DECmcc on VMS (no ULTRIX!). He also
absolutely needs a good cable management system. Unfortunately, CABLEmanager is
not available on VMS.
Does anybody know of a valid alternative which runs on VMS?
Does anybody know whether CABLEmanager can run on Open VMS (i.e. is it POSIX
compatible?). If yes we could have DECmcc on Open VMS and run CABLEmanager on
the same machine. Any comment on this?
In the worst case we will offer DECmcc and CABLEmanager on two separate
workstations. Can anybody suggest the least expensive configuration sufficient
to run just CABLEmanager?
Thanks in advance
