3185.0. "Cable/node fault isolation possible?" by HGSW67::CHARLESKWAN () Tue Jun 16 1992 04:59
Hi, there,
This is a generic network management question.
A customer is currently using DECmcc to monitor their VAXes. They are
planning to have a project which will use DECmcc to monitor the status
of 100+ PCs. As these PCs will be running DECnet, we can just treat
them as DECnet phase IV nodes.
There are 2 problems now:
1. On the PC running Pathworks for DOS, the NML (Network Management
Listener) is available. However there is no mirror object and
thus loop back using TEST is not possible.
2. We don't know how to distinguish whether there is a fault in
the cable (the UTP cable connecting the PCs and the UTP repeater)
or the PC (hardware failure or power failure).
Any suggestions to tackle the above problems are welcomed.
Thanks and regards,
Charles.
