3174.0. "Register fails on ULTRIX; INGRES vs. ULTRIX/SQL" by FRUST::HAMILTON () Fri Jun 12 1992 06:00

We have successfully installed MCC 1.2.7 on Ultrix 4.2. We are getting the
following error when doing a MANAGE ; register node4 frsold ... etc

   Fatal MIR I/O error...

This case is specifically mentioned in the release notes as being related to
the access rights granted on the files in the /var/mcc directory (page 3-6,
section 3.7.1). We tried to follow the instructions given page 3-9 of the
installation guide, which are supposed to alleviate this problem. These in-
structions would not work exactly as written. Ultrix will not create a group
called "mcc_users" using addgroup, but will print a message to the effect that
this name is too long. We tried to get around this by creating a group named
"mcc_user" which ULTRIX created. We then performed the change in group acc-
ess rights mentioned in the above mantioned section, but this had no effect
within MCC - the register command still failed with the same msg. We must
be doing something wrong here as others have apparently installed and run
MCC on ULTRIX. Any ideas?

Also, I want to install INGRES on my Decstation, and want to remove ULTRIX/
SQL, which is effectively dead anyway. Will this cause any compatibility
issues with MCC? The environment variables are the same for both products,
but MCC may have its hooks buried deeper in ULTRIX/SQl than that.

Thank you. We will have to fix our documentation (probably by release
note at this point).

You must stop all of your DECmcc processes (mcc_kill) and let them re-start
after changing file protections.

You may also need to log out and back in to make the new group effective.

We have not tested the exporter on ULTRIX with any database other than
ULTRIX/SQL (the exporter is the only part of DECmcc that uses SQL or INGRES).
However, I don't believe we are using any hidden interfaces, so it
is likely to work.
