3129.0. "pagefile/swapfile requirements???" by CAADC::GALVIN (Mic Galvin, MCI Team) Wed Jun 03 1992 17:39
DECmcc PAGEFILE Requirements
Hi there,
I've got an MCC Station built on a VAXserver 3900, 64mg Memory, 2
RF71s, with an Xterminal 1300 for the IMPM. We're at VMS 5.4-3 and
T1.2.7 of BMS.
I just installed the latest TSAM kit... 4 hours later, errrr! I
tried desperately to regain some diskspace on my System disk. I had
setup the Server with a 140k pagefile & 50k swapfile, and have an
additional pagefile of 140k on the second disk. In trying to gain
diskspace, I ran SWAPFILES and tried to create a smaller 'primary'
pagefile. The disk was too fragmented and I only got about 12k. After
rebooting, I blew away the previous 'primary' and attempted to build
another one... unfortunately, my header is full...errr! Not the best
of days, so I'm presently rebuilding my disk....whew!
Which leads me to my question... In running MCC_AUDIT, and in the
class I took on DECmcc, we discussed several 'system' related
requirements, however, I don't recall any specific *stats* on
page/swapfiles. Now I realize... "it depends". What I'm wondering is
are there any specific recommendations for #s of pagefiles, 1? 2? 3?,
and if so, any #s for sizes? I should mention that the Xterminal has
8mg of memory and I've seen problems getting the Iconic Map started in
batch... I've reconciled just firing up a window... and have raised
the WS sizes on different occasions to 4096 and as high as 8192, with
30% for WSEXTENT...
When I rebuild the system disk, I'm going to attempt to create a
50k primary pagefile on the system disk, and retain the 140k on the
other disk. I haven't tried to fire up the IMPM with this setup in
mind, yet... so stay tuned. I guess I'm looking for additional tuning
tips...thanks.
/Mic

| Here are my account quotas. I am running on a vs3100 which is a
satellite of a vax 3800. Hope this helps.

| Did you run the MCC_AUDIT on the T1.2.7 kit?
Did you run it from the account that you use DECmcc from?
It checks for a total of 120k blocks of pagefile space. Anything more
and it doesn't complain. If you are going to have multiple instances
of DECmcc running (IMPM + FCL + BATCH + EXPORT...) then I would want
about 200k for pagefile space.
I would set my wsextent higher than 8k. I use 16000 for wsextent
which matches the VMS Default for WSMAX.
Look at the balence set if you want to force swapping. By the way,
a swapfile isn't needed really as long as you have enough pagefile.
