2758.0. "Multiple OCCURs firing, one event occurred" by ANOSWS::COMFORT (Spent a little time on the hill) Tue Apr 14 1992 11:53

    Hi again -

I orginally wrote this note for the DECnet conference, but thought
better of that and am now posting same query here for MCC enginerring
consideration first. My version is MCC V1.1.

I am implementing DECmcc at a customer site and have observed some
odd things happening with NICE messages when doing event sinking
from various DEMSAs to the DECmcc system. MCC has a process called
MCC_DNA4_EVL which declares itself as a sink on the MCC system.
(Please correct any terminology faupauxs). At any rate, the overall
    situation is as follows:

Two DEMSAs on a LAN in the US routing for area 1, each with a
DDCMP circuit to two DEMSAs on an extended LAN in the UK, each
routing for a different area. There are around 6 other DEMSAs
in the UK and a dozen various area routers (VAXen, DEMSAs and
DECrouter 250s) connected in via 9.6 X25 links and 19.2 and
56 kb DDCMP links throughout the world. There are three areas on
the LAN in the US and outside of the DEMSAs in area 1, there are
two area routers in each on the other areas. The MCC system with
the MCC evl process is on the LAN in the US. The main circuit to
the UK is 128 kb and the backup link is 64 kb.

On the two DEMSAs in the US I have enabled the MCC system as a sink
node and I am passing event 4.17 (area state change). When an area
state change occurs, I receive multiple messages about the same
occurance all within a short period of time, usually on the order of 10
    - 20 seconds. In one case, the MCC system received 16 messages for the
same event, when area 11 became reachable again. This morning area 14
went unreachable and the MCC system got four messages (three from one
DEMSA and one from the other). When area 14 came back, the MCC system
got two messages, one from each DEMSA. So my question is :

Why am I getting multiple messages. Is this because of area
    	routing updates?

One more piece of info, one DEMSA is an X25 router, the other is
    a DECrouter.

Thanks in advance for information about this query.

    Regards,

    Dave Comfort

    So...

Why is it that my query was not addressed, however when the exact
same problem is entered later in this conference, it was addressed
    almost immediately?

It's a conspiracy, Dave. The development group has standing orders to ignore
all requests from Dave Comfort.

    Dave,

It's probably because development work for V1.2 is slowing down and
developers now have a little bandwidth to monitor the notesfile. I'm
sure there will be more and more replies from developers over the next
several weeks. People who have entered notes a while ago with no
response should probably reenter them (and probably re-word them as
well). As a regular user of this notesfile you should appreciate the
level effort required to monitor (and moderate) this notesfile.

I'd also would like to say that I do understand the large undertaking
in maintaining the notesfile and all the work the engineers are doing
and I appreciate it. Likewise, out in the field, there can be a great
amount of pressure placed on us digital "representatives". The product
is great and all you folks really do a fine job. Like everyone else I
sometimes blow off steam and it is not meant to be directed at anyone
or anything. At any rate, I will be pursuing this in the other
    thread.

    Peace,

    Dave Comfort
