2547.0. "Beginner questions for MCC" by MSBCS::HSU () Wed Mar 11 1992 16:07

    Hi!
We are trying to use DEC MCC product to build our application and we
have no one knows how to use it. So we have alot of questions to ask
    for the help.

    These are the beginner's questions:
    a. What version of DEC MCC shall we use? We copied down internal base
level 15 and ran the installation.
    b. When we tried to create a domain, we got "map window message: entity
is not valid, please check spelling." error message. I don't know there
is a restriction about the name of the domain, is it?
    c. We are hoping to use MCC to build applcation which can manage
processes, servers and databases. Can MCC be applied? All we have seen
from the documents of MCC are network objects.

    Thanks in advance...

these is a 25 character limit on the name of a domain. Did you
remember to enroll each of the management modules (installation IVP
    kpass?)

MCC was initially started by the network management team that is why
the current applications we supply are all network based. This is
NOT a requirement placed on us the the "framework" (what we call
the underlying base system and generic applications like domain
    and alarms).

You can use MCC to do any type of management you want. At the last
DECUS the common agent people were there demoing system management
through DECmcc (kudos to Dave Lyons, it was a real nice demo).

Could you tell us just what you attempted to enter as the
    domain name? it would help.

WELL! I don't know if we installed Mcc correctly... I copied the base-level 15
down and installed BMS and TOOL KITS. We ran the IVPs for both kits. What else
do we have to do? I don't understand how to enroll each management modules, I
guess I did not enroll each management modules (IVP KPASS??)

What I did was to invoke MCC/interface=decwindows and entered the new domain name.
The name I used was only few characters long. I beleve we may not install the Mcc
correctly.

I will try to look into the installation menu. Sorry! we did not go through the
whole book. Normally, it is a much small book... ):-

    Read the release notes too.

Be sure to read the installation (and planning) guide.

Did you use DNS or a local namespace?

What operating system are you using? What version?

Well!
We installed the Mcc BMS and TK products and ran the IVPs for both products.
I then invoked "Manager/enterprise/interface=decwindows". The Mcc window came up
and I selected "new domain" and entered the name like "BXB1". I know I much did
somthing wrong... But can't figure it out...
I will assume we can using local name space, but how can I tell?

When you installed the BMS kit it askes you what to use for a namspace.
At that time you chose which you are using.

The logical MCC_DNS_SELECTION says what you have chosen.
Show logical MCC* and see what you get. If it looks like that below,
then you chose to use DECdns and therefore must follow the directions
in the manual about setting it up.

    "MCC_DNS_SELECTION" = "DNS"
