Do you mean "management platform" or the boxes themselves ? Vitalink
has chosen SNMP *only* as the management protocol for any *new* boxes.
For existing boxes (i.e. the TransLAN line) they are implementing both
SNMP *and* RBMS (Vitalink's version of RBMS) support as of release
10.5. This means that existing TransLANs will be manageable from
- SNMP management stations (e.g. OMS, MSU, DECmcc, etc)
- DECmcc with Vitalink Bridge AM
- WANmanager

2448.2 | A little more info? | AUNTB::BRILEY | Are you a rock or leaf in the wind | Thu Feb 27 1992 15:18 | 9 |
| So as of version 10.5 I should be able to manage my TransLan's with the
the SNMP AM? Are there any specific MIB extensions?
I currently am running version 10.4.3. Is 10.5 available? If not, do
you have any idea when?
Thanks,
Rob

To the extent that you find SNMP useful, yes. ;^) I should warn you that
almost all of the variables in their MIB extensions are read only and there is
NO capability to manage filters with their SNMP AM. You will still need to be
able to do some sort of terminal access (e.g. 'tip', set ho/dte, modem, etc) to
their console port to use their console managegement (which is where they make
you do most of the real work, anyway... |^( )
Also, I have only seen the 10.5 releases. I have no idea how much of an SNMP
agent they'll be able to squeeze onto a TransLAN III... Remember, it'll be
running *concurrently* with their RBMS agent and CPU/memory is scarcer on the
older boxes....
Yes, Vitalink has defined their own private MIB extensions. I have tested it
against the SNMP AM and it will be included on the next release of the SNMP AM.

Soon. Very soon. Vitalink should be making an announcement in the next few
weeks.

2448.4 | VBAM or SNMP? | AUNTB::BRILEY | Are you a rock or leaf in the wind | Fri Feb 28 1992 08:29 | 14 |
| Doug,
For the short, medium, and long term, how would you recommend managing
Vitalink bridges from MCC? VBAM or SNMP AM?
If memory serves me correctly, the VBAM can do most management
functions with the exception of setting up some filters. Will the
current/future (when?) implementation of their SNMP provide
similar/more functionality? How much of this will the be able to
squeeze onto a TL335?
Thanks again,
Rob

Right *now* you can only use VBAM w/DECmcc V1.1 to manage your Translans
from MCC. VBAM doesn't work on V1.2 (yet). Vitalink has committed to
update it to work on DECmcc 1.2 (VMS only).
Medium/long-term depends on your customer's environment. If ULTRIX, then
the answer is SNMP, cuz the VBAM will never go to ULTRIX. If VMS, then
it's a tough call.

Nope. VBAM 1.0 will let you create/delete filters.

I don't know. Again: The RBMS management capabilities of the Translan
line will remain the same; the amount of SNMP manageability they will be
able to put on the box is a function of available memory/cpu. I have yet
to see how much of an SNMP agent they've been able to wedge onto a TLIII or
TL320.
