I have a customer that was experiencing a somewhat strange problem that he says is related to DNS. Everytime he would log into the system and bring up his maps, seems as though each time things would change..ie.. the maps would be there one time and not the next. He was working with our folks in Colorado and the conclusion was that there was another system on his network in another location (state), that had DECmcc running, and was built with the same distribution as his system. ( Both systems are NETsupport systems built with the same cdrom distribution disk). So DNS was setup the same on both systems. When he had the other system shutdown the problem went away. Can anyone tell me how to avoid this problem. What in DNS can be changed on one of these systems to avoid this conflict, and can this be done easily ? The customer does not know very much about DNS but wants to make the changes himself. Can anyone provide some help......Thanks...... d.j.

We had the same problem some time ago (note 1221). Basically what it comes down to is that you have to reinstall DNS. Be carefull to NOT delete ALL DNS files, since some of them (I don't remember which ones) come with VMS. There are some notes in this notesfile about reinstalling DNS. (SH KEY DNS/FULL). Timo | |||||
2434.2 | Some Suggestions | TOOK::R_SPENCE | Nets don't fail me now... | Tue Mar 10 1992 11:16 | 27 |
What is more likely is that you are not always finding the MAP files. When DECmcc is installed the definition for MCC_MAPS points to your current default directory. If you do not always take care to be set default to the same place when you start up DECmcc then you may get strange results when the system opens a domain and looks for the map files. I suggest redefining MCC_MAPS to point EXACTLY where you expect the map files to be located. I suggest you create a directory to be used exclusivly for map files and either redefine MCC_MAPS in the system startup after DECmcc startups have completed (be sure to DEFINE/SYSTEM/EXEC), or put a definition in SYLOGIN.COM, or, in LOGIN.COM if only one user logs in. re; .1 By all means be careful reinstalling DNS. If you don't know how it is done, DO NOT invent it!!! Most files with the prefix DNS$ are part of VMS and must not be deleted. Look at NETS::USER$NETS:[MCC011.S-KIT]DNS_REINSTALL.TXT for the details on what TO do. s/rob |
