Hi, I have a configuration question for DECmcc T1.2.4 on ULTRIX 4.2A. In the "Planning and Installation for ULTRIX" document it is written that you need a minimum of 24 MB of memory and 100 MB of swap file per user. I am quite new under ULTRIX, so I would like some precisions about those limits. Does those 24 MB includes all the ULTRIX and network stuff, is it an "easily" reachable limit ? About the swap file : what is an user ? Is it an iconic map user, a FCL user, with lot of alarms ... I use this DECmcc version on a DECstation 5000-25 with 16M of memory and one RZ25 disk (426M) with 65M of swap file. We set up the kernel as specified in the installation documentation. The response time is quite bad. Franois EBLE. EIS Strasbourg France.

2372.1 | User=UID. You need more memory. | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz, DECmcc Development, dtn 226-5033 | Wed Feb 19 1992 13:33 | 30 |

Does those 24 MB includes all the ULTRIX and network > stuff, is it an "easily" reachable limit ? 24 Mb is a minimum for the ULTRIX O/S and DECmcc for ULTRIX. As to whether it is "easily" reachable, depends what you mean by reachable. As you set up more alarms, or historical recording, etc, you will need more resources (especially memory) to maintain performance. > About the swap file : what is an user ? > Is it an iconic map user, a FCL user, with lot of alarms A user is a unique UID running DECmcc. The swap space requirement is based on the number of management modules running at the same time. Since multiple PMs (FCL or Iconic Map) sessions running under the same UID share single copies of the management modules, you only need to expand your swap space when you add more UIDs. ... > I use this DECmcc version on a DECstation 5000-25 with 16M of memory and > one RZ25 disk (426M) with 65M of swap file. Furthermore, with a 65 Mb swap partition, you must not yet be running all of the management modules. At some point you will try a new function, and it will fail (and likely with an unhelpfull error message, unfortunately), due to the lack of swap space.
2372.2 | And with a DECstation 3100 ? | STRASB::EBLE | Thu Feb 20 1992 05:29 | 8
Hi, thanks for those informations. Now I could get a DECstation 3100 with 24 Mb of memory. It's easier to get it than to fight to have a memory expansion ... But, is this solution better ? In other words is the 3100 CPU fast enough for DECmcc ? Thanks.
2372.3 | We use DS-3100s | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz, DECmcc Development, dtn 226-5033 | Thu Feb 20 1992 07:30 | 3 |
We are running DECmcc on some 24 Mb DS-3100s here in development. My guess is that having the memory is more important than having the faster CPU, but that is not based on any systematic measurement. |
