2345.0. "DECmcc ELMS/ULTRIX installation problems" by ANDRIS::putnins (Hands across the Baltics) Thu Feb 13 1992 15:39

I'm having problems installing the DECmcc Extended LAN Manager T1.2 kit
for ULTRIX/RISC (announced in note 3.133). I've copied the tar file
twice, but each time I try to install the ELMS FM, I get a setld
verification error (see below). Note that the ELMS AM installation
completed without errors.

Sorry, the tar file seems to have been corrupted somehow.

It's been replaced and verified.

btw, when you copy the tar file, please use the -i option on dcp.

Tom,

Should there be an instctrl directory, SPACE, etc. in the kit? All I
have is

tar -tf elm120.tar
ELU.image
ELUAM120
ELUFM120

and I get

setld -l .
setld: /usr/users/wride/instctrl: no such file or directory
setld: cannot load control information

I had tried to install the old kit and had this stuff, but I deleted
it all! :^(

2345.5Kit still has problemsANDRIS::putninsHands across the BalticsTue Feb 18 1992 20:1615
Thanks for correcting the problem with the corrupted FM subset. Now
I've discovered that the replacement /usr/mcc/mmexe/mcc_iconic_map_pm
image, dated Jan. 31, 1992 (part of the ELUFM120 subset), doesn't work.
When attempting to start up, it always returns " error in Full Name
value", with no further clue as to the problem.

I've restored the original image, dated Dec. 20, 1991, from the
MCRBMST124 subset, and everything seems to be working again. Don't ask
how long it took me to figure this out! :^(

I'm running with a real DECdns namespace named "local:", which resides
on a VAX DNS V1.1 server. If this is important, note that I've
migrated this namespace to use the new SNMP AM directory structure.

Please feel free to copy the ULTRIX ELM kit once again. The corrupted file
system has been corrected. If you copied anything from here in the past few
days, please delete what you've got and copy from scratch; you may have bogus
files.

Anyway, that directory should contain *all* of the following:

2345.9Iconic Map PM returning error message "error if Full Name"STEVEV::VINGERHOETWed Feb 19 1992 17:0819
Andy,

The IMPM will not start up properly if there are extraneous
characters (such as tabs) specified for the default domain
name.

When you customize your default domain name make sure there
are no tabs after the domain name.

The default domain is stored in mcc_resource.dat

You can try commenting out your default domain in that file,
by putting a ! in the first column. Then try invoking the IMPM
again to see if the error message goes away.

Note that this is a new problem that was not present in previous
iconic map executables.

Steve
2345.10Cannot open *any* domainsANDRIS::putninsHands across the BalticsThu Feb 20 1992 11:5823
My mcc_resource.dat file was created by mcc itself when I set my
default from the customize/general memu item of the original (BMS kit)
impm. As you suggested, I commented out the default domain line (which
does contain a tab after the colon):

!mcc_pml.gen_defDomain: .dec

The iconic map PM now starts up, but it won't let me open any of my
domains, displaying a popup message window stating "Map Window Message:
entity not valid. Please check spelling.". It doesn't matter whether I
specify just a domain name, or if I prefix it with a namespace name.

If I use the filter to search for any valid domain names (with default
"*"), it puts up a blank "work in progress" popup window, then another
popup message window stating "Map Window Message: error in Full Name
value". I can dismiss the second window, but the first one is never
closed. After several attempts at this (including several "work in
progress" popups hanging around), some thread dies with "Exception in
Mgt Module (id=7), CMA code = 40802c", and I have to kill the impm process.

Am I the only one having these problems?

2345.11And what does FCL have to say?...BSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Thu Feb 20 1992 12:2513
	Andy,

Back up a min. Try the FCL. do a
	MCC> DIR DOMAIN *

Assuming you get some domains, try a
MCC> SHOW DOMAIN name MEMBER *

Try to create a domain from FCL. Put some mebers in it, look
at them. Then try the map opening THAT domain. This will
	isolate the problem.

2345.12FCL worksANDRIS::putninsHands across the BalticsThu Feb 20 1992 14:0111
Yes, FCL works. The namespace has been in existence for over a year,
supporting a VMS MCC 1.0 and 1.1 system. I've recently added an ULTRIX
system running MCC T1.2.4, and everything was fine until I installed
the ELM kit. The FCL on the same ULTRIX system works fine. I can
reproduce the problem simply by renaming the
/usr/mcc/mmexe/mcc_iconic_map image to use either the BMS kit version
or the ELM kit version.

The namespace contains over 30 domains and around 500 objects.

Subject: Iconic Map PM problems

Andy,

I found your note about getting "error in Full Name value" and "entity not
valid. Please check spelling." errors with the ELMS kit. We're getting exactly
the same errors here, and I wondered whether you've heard anything more from
the developers? Is there a fix available other than the one you found to use
an old mcc_iconic_map image? (If not, do you have a copy of the BMS kit
version that I could copy over?)

Thanks for any information you can provide.

                                        Steve
2345.14WorkaroundSTEVEV::VINGERHOETFri Mar 13 1992 14:3133
The errors "error in Full Name value" and "entity not valid. Please
check spelling" are bugs in the image /usr/mcc/mmexe/mcc_iconic_map_pm

Unfortunately, we can not distribute a new version of this executable
until the next release of BMS.

However, there is a workaround. You can use FCL to generate the ELMs
FM Topology map files and then use the old version of the iconic map
to view them.

I have placed a copy of the old mcc_iconic_map_pm that was shipped with
BMS in the following directory:

bhub::/elmkit       for DECnet address 55.894
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 4390912 Dec 20 06:25 mcc_iconic_map_pm

OR

bhub:/elmkit for IP address 16.21.16.156

So...

1) place this old version in your /usr/mcc/mmexe/mcc_iconic_map_pm
2) setenv MCC_MAPS /var/mcc/elm
3) run the Spanning Tree Map FM or FDDI Map FM (these programs will
place the map files in /var/mcc/elm)
4) run the mcc_iconic_map_pm and then 'open domain' or 'read snapshot'
of the map file that the FM put into /var/mcc/elm. Note that
if you did not specify 'autoregister' option, then you must
read map file as a snapshot.
