2342.0. "RS/6000, HP 8000, SUN managed by DECmcc" by MAIL::HILDEBRAND () Thu Feb 13 1992 11:37

    My customer wants to pilot DECmcc using SNMP agents with MIB II on
    an RS6000, HP 8000, Synoptics 10BaseT, NCD X-terminals, SUN
    Sparcstation, and a 3Com IB2000 router.

    Has anyone tried this type of pilot?

    Are their any MIBs compiled and on-line relating to these devices?

    Are there any known problems associated with this type of effort?

    My customer has seen HP's OpenView product and is an HP bigot.
    However, based on a demo and presentation surrounding DECmcc, the
    customer would like to pilot our product and stated that he thought we
    had a more robust platform than anything else he had looked at. Hence,
    we need for this pilot to go well.

2342.1MIB II does not need to be compiledTOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, DECmcc Development, dtn 226-5033Thu Feb 13 1992 12:387

MIB II is an integral part of V1.2, so you don't need to compile anything.
Some vendor private extensions may be available, and would need to be
compiled.
2342.2MIBs that agree with agents in concise MIB formatTOOK::R_SPENCENets don't fail me now...Thu Feb 13 1992 13:1312
    And...

    The major difficulties I would expect you to run into is getting the
    vendor private extensions (if you need em for the evaluation) for
    all the devices
    -1 in concise mib format so we can compile them
    -2 that agree with the agents on the devices

    I don't know if we have any of the ones you mentioned. Someone else
    may and reply here.

	About the mibs. The Synoptics mib is on the V1.1 and T1.2.X kits.
	3COM, as far as I know, supports only MIB II. I have a copy of the
	SUN and HP mibs. Let me know if you want them and I'll mail them
	to you. I have no information about the mibs supported by the other
	SNMP agents.

2342.4Be sure each node has an SNMP Agent.CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentSun Feb 16 1992 15:5811
    John,

    	You're also going to have to make sure that there are SNMP agents
    on each of the nodes. The DECmcc V1.1 SNMP_AM will not even allow a
    node to be registered if it is not running an SNMP agent.

    	Additionally, the T1.2.4 (soon to be V1.2) version will only allow
    you to get minimal (e.g., ICMP / ping) information from a node not
    running an SNMP agent.
