2246.0. "Announcing UDMT" by MINDER::GILBERT (Open Systems Engineering @ MCO) Fri Jan 31 1992 10:58
INTERNAL ANNOUNCEMENT
of
ULTRIX Distributed Management Toolkit
(UDMT)
INTRODUCTION
The UDM Toolkit software provides system management and fault detection
functions for multivendor UNIX networks. It enables a centralised management
facility to administer and support a large number of distributed systems
without the need for experienced system management staff to be present at the
outlying sites.
UDM Toolkit is an extension to the DECmcc Director for ULTRIX product which
means that the same management station can be used for both network and
system management functions.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The UDM Toolkit software consists of the following:-
o A series of EMA compliant access modules for remote system monitoring
that are run from the DECmcc Director for ULTRIX. The access modules are
fully compatible with the range of function and presentation modules
provided by the DECmcc director product e.g. performance monitoring,
alarm detection and reporting mechanisms.
o Separate utilities that can be used to manage remote systems invoked from
the DECmcc user interface. The remote system is selected by using the
DECmcc iconic map or forms line interface and the required system
management operation selected from a pulldown menu.
The ULTRIX System AM.
The ULTRIX system AM allows the system manager to monitor ULTRIX system
statistics, cpu usage, disk usage and printer queue status. With the ULTRIX
system AM management operations might include gathering information on cpu
performance, setting alarms on disk capacity and setting alarms on the status
of particular print queues.
The Remote Station AM.
The Remote Station AM provides loopback tests for remote ethernet devices
that support Ethernet V2 LOOPBACK and IEEE802.3 TEST. The functions are
served by an ULTRIX system connected to the remote LAN. The tests allow the
system manager to monitor and test for LAN connectivity of such devices as
PC's and Terminal servers.
The Select FM.
The Select FM allows the system manager to select a system using either the
iconic map or command line interface. Once selected the system manager can
then perform a wide range of management functions such as remote software
installation, remote backup management and remote system auto-login. The
Select FM provides a bridge between the DECmcc Director user interface and
application software external to the DECmcc environment.
Remote Software Installation and Management.
Once a system has been selected the system manager can perform remote
software installations, list currently installed kits and delete installed
kits.
To install a kit, a command sequence is initiated to automatically install a
software subset on the remote system. The software kit is then copied to the
remote system and the installation initiated using a control file specified
by the system manager. Once the installation has completed the system manager
will be notified of its status by electronic mail.
Remote System Backup
The system manager can also remotely define the backup policy to be used on
the selected system. The system manager is presented with a menu giving
options to view details on the last backup performed, modify the backup
regime, or change the time of the backup operation. The system manager can be
mailed with the completion status of the backup operation.
System Manager Auto-Login
This enables the system manager to automatically log-in through to a system
management account to perform more general management operations on the
remote system.
Terminal Server Management
This allows the system manager to select a terminal server from the iconic
map and then route the manager though to the remote ULTRIX system from which
management operations on the terminal server can be performed.
Pathworks Management
This allows the system manager to select a PC Pathworks server from the
Iconic map and then route the manager though to the remote ULTRIX Pathworks
server from which management operations on the server can be performed.
PREREQUISITES
Software: DECmcc Director for ULTRIX V1.2, plus any associated
pre-requisites.
Hardware: as for DECmcc Director for ULTRIX.
UDM TOOLKIT STATUS AND AVAILABILITY
The UDM Toolkit Version 1.0 software development was completed in Sep-1991
and is available now for demonstration and evaluation.
UDM Toolkit Version 1.1 development is close to completion. It is available
for demonstration now and will be available for customer evaluation by
end-Feb-1992. Version 1.1 adds enhancements to the V1.0 functionality.
Development of UDM Toolkit Version 1.2 is now in progress and scheduled to be
available for demonstration and evaluation at the end of Q3FY92. This version
will add the ability to manage SUN SPARCstations and SPARCsystems running
SunOS V4.1.1.
Full release of the UDM Toolkit will be synchronised with the release of
DECmcc Director for ULTRIX V1.2,which is currently expected to be early
Q4FY92. Until that time, customer sites must have the DECmcc Director for
ULTRIX FT software installed.
UDM Toolkit will be distributed through European ASSETS. Consultancy services
to demonstrate and support UDMT for UK customers will be available in Q3FY92,
via Technology Service Centres in the UK. A Digital Services training course
is scheduled for 24-Feb-1992.
Distribution and support in other geographies is undefined at this time.

| Julio,
UDM availability through ASSETS has had to be put back until the release of
DECmcc V1.2.
FT kits of UDM are available on the network, see notes conference
MUGGER::UDM for details (DIR/TITLE=kit).
