2227.0. "memory loss 1.2.4" by F18::ROBERT () Thu Jan 30 1992 11:32

This monday I got DECmcc 1.2.4 up and running on a VAXstation 3100
model 48, with 32MB of memeory. two RZ56's and a couple of internal
    disk drives.

When I was running the older version 1.1 on this system, I usuallly
had around 12,000 blocks of free memory. I am exporting circuit infor-
mation on 9 nodes, every 5 hours. I am also exporting node, line and
circuit information on 2 nodes, every 4 hr. 30 min.

Let me state that when I was using 1.1, I was doing the same as above,
except that I was exporting on 3 nodes, node, line and circuit.

I am only doing 2 nodes, node, line and circuit, plus the other 9 nodes
    of circuit exporting now.

Every day that I look at the free memeory, it is constantly eroding
away. It is now down to 5247 free blocks out of 65536 total. I have
all of my sysgen and authoruize parameters set to what you have
    specified.

What is going on? Can someone shed some light as to why my memory is
    being eaten up?

    Thanks Dave

I have very limited activity going on on the system.

2227.1What is it that you are losing?TOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, DECmcc DevelopmentThu Jan 30 1992 12:4115
I'm not sure what it is that you are losing here.
Is it disk space, or memory?

Disk space you would be checking with "Show Device", and the output
would be in blocks.

Memory you would check with "Show Memory", and the output would
be in bytes, or Mb.

If you are losing memory, then we have a bug in the code somewhere.
If you are losing disk space, it may simply be because when you record
data, it is stored on the disk.

Disk space is fine. I have tons of it. The problem is memory loss.

I logged out 2 window sessions and got back about 2000 pages.

After getting DECmcc 1.2.4 going, and starting all of my exporting
jobs, I did a show mem. I had 19078 free pages at the time, i.e.

Thanks for the clarification. It was the use of "blocks" in the
base note that confused me.

This indeed looks like a serious memory leak. We have a team tracking
down just such problems, and I have entered QAR 2244 in mcc_internal
with your informationn.

Thanks,

This is what I have left this morning. I am going to be attending
NET U, so I am going to have to shut down DECmcc, or else my system
will run out of memory while I am gone.

The answer to QAR 02244 has arrived.

We have spent a great deal of time and effort on memory leak containment
in the past several months. As soon as our system is able to meet exit criteria
it will be judged adequate in the memory leak/clobber department to be hipped
as a product.
