2212.0. "Ingres Base Tools - issues" by ENUF::GASSMAN () Tue Jan 28 1992 14:30
In a quest to obtain the Ingres Base Tools for a field test customer,
so they could produce reports with exported data, I received this
answer from the OSG database product manager. It discusses the changed
relationship with Ingres - and the future of Ingres on OSF.

Subj: RE: getting ingres tools
Bill,
Unfortunately,Digital does not own the rights to loan the Ingres tools products
to our customers. Only Ingres can make that decision. Digital recently
replaced an existing DDS agreement for these products with a CSH agreement. We
can no longer sell the Ingres tools products from our pricebook. They must be
obtained through Ingres.
I'm concerned about one thing you have implied in this message. Are you
requiring all customers, field test and post-frs, to obtain the Ingres tools
products to run reports? I see this as a major dependency you or your customers
may have on Ingres, and there may be a better solution. Perhaps a VAR
arrangement with Ingres would satisfy that requirement.
If your dependency starts with the use of the ULTRIX/SQL database and the
requirement is to purchase the Ingres Tools for ULTRIX/SQL product, we may have
a future problem. The USSG strategy is to freeze U/SQL functionality at it's
current level on ULTRIX for the foreseeable future and to NOT offer a bundled
database with DEC OSF. It's entirely possible that Ingres could phase out their
tools products for ULTRIX/SQL if this strategy gets implemented.
FYI - I've copied Joe LaValle on this message. He is DEC's relationship manager
to Ingres and is aware of our strategies. Joe - feel free to submit your
comments on this.

Subj: getting ingres tools
Kathy, your name came up as a contact for Ingres tools. Here's the
problem. I'm with the DECmcc/ultrix group - and we're in field test.
To product network management reports with saved data, ingres tools
are required. One of our field test customers won't buy the tools
for a field test product cause they are not sure they will use the
product after field test is over. They want us to loan the tools
to them. We really don't have the budget to buy tools for all our
30 field test customers - so are looking for other options, such as
the internal price. Do you have any advice?
thanks...
bill
