How to compete with CISCO for network management. One of our biggest customers is looking now for a network management tools. This customer has a significant number of VAX, DEC, Digital Bridges. He has recently decided to go CISCO for extending his LAN. He has also a large number of Siemens (BS2000,SINIX,....). We are in a bad situation positioning DECMCC for several reasons. The man who is responsible of the decision does not have a Digital Background and has been persuaded that he needs a CISCO network management tools called SPECTRUM. This is sold by the CISCO reseller. I have several areas where I would like to get some help. . Does somebody knows SPECTRUM, what are the strongness/weakness regarding the next version of DECMCC (by the way, DECMCC will offer the same features on VMS and on ULTRIX, isn't it) ? . According previous notes, CISCO does not follow the RFC1212. For this reason, we have to do some surgery in order to be able to manage the CISCO boxes. My question are then : - When this surgery is done, will DECMCC offer the same features as SPECTRUM ? - As CISCO seems to be a major provider in numerous fields, does it exist a official agreement/plan ( note 2177.1 ???) we could use to position DECMCC ? . Does it exist somewhere in Europe a site that is managing Cisco boxes with DECMCC which could be used as reference/visit ? . Does it exists somewhere in Europe a site that has some experience / plans for managing SIEMENS boxes with DECMCC ? This is really critical for Digital. Loosing this, would certainly delayed DECMCC in this site (which is DECNET phase V pilot for Belgium/Luxembourg). Thanks and Regards Pierre - EIS Luxembourg -

SPECTRUM is a cabletron product - the only reason I'd see cisco selling it would be if they are selling your customer their cisco router cards to be put into the cabletron smart-hub. SPECTRUM is also very costly, and has sold very few. They have made some far-out marketing claims about their product and word on the street is that not everything they claim is there. (pot calling the kettle black?) Cisco's typical offering is called NET-CENTRAL. I haven't heard that it does anything special that MSU or MCC can't do, once the cisco MIB is imported into it. You may have to bid some services to write some alarms and generate some reports, but should be able to make the customer happy. bill | |||||

I do not believe that there is another product on the market that can manage this environment. You have listed : VAXes DECnet (IV & V) DECbridges TCP/IP (CISCO & Siemens) Spectrum as it exists today can only manage TCP/IP, whereas DECmcc can manage all of the above since V1.1. regards ray |
