Hi, I have a DNS problem! (says it all really!) I am running T1.2.3 DNS V1.1 I have appended a log of what happens with my problem, but in essence it is this. 1 Start DNS..........no problem 2 run dns$ivp........no problem 3 update the namespace using mcc_dns_setup.com.........no problem (this bit not shown in the log but the IVP shows the directories) 4 try accessing the namespace using dns$control........ no problem 5 create a domain in the namespace under the .domain directory get the cannot communicate with DNS server error At this point the DNS$ADVER process takes 99% cpu and keeps it! Any further reference to the namespace whatever results in the system crashing! Help! 2161.1 | Try to create a DNS object using DNS$Control | TRM::KWAK | Wed Jan 22 1992 09:35 | 20
When you issue the MCC> create domain .domain.test, the MCC will create two DNS objects - .domain.test, and .domain.test_MCC_EXT000. Can you check if you can create an object in the namespace by issueing DNS$Control command: $ mcr dns$control DNS> show object OLONMS_NS:.domain.test_foo DNS> create object OLONMS_NS:.domain.test_foo Object class? DNS$Group Class version? 1.0 If the above DNS$Control command is not successful, the MCC command cannot succeed either. Please make sure that the DNS server process is running on the DNS server node.

Did both of these commands after restarting DNS and both were succesful. Then did MAN/ent MCC> create domain .domain.test got the cannot communicate with DNS server message as before, DNS$ADVER took 100% cpu, tried using dns$control to do ANYTHING and system crashed again! Stuart

2161.4 | Update | WOTVAX::HATTOS | I think, Therefore I'm paid less | Thu Jan 23 1992 08:20 | 22 |
The first time I tried your suggestions, i got $mc dns$control DNS> show dir .domain known object MACHINE CRASHED after i hit return. 8*( It is rebooting at the moment, I will try the commands again when it is up. The first time I try to use dns$control everything will be fine. After I come out of MCC after doing the second command, I will get a cannot communicate with DNS server, DNS$ADVER will take 100% cpu and the machine will crash on the next DNS reference. This is based on the behaviour I have witnessed over the last 5 days..8*( thanks for your help, Stuart
