I'm trying to monitor a SPIDER Bridge with DECmcc v1.1 and the SNMP access module V1.1.1. I have UCX installed and can do a loop command to the Spider bridge. When I try and register the Bridge I get "No response from entity." I have checked the spider bridge to make sure I have access for my TCP/IP address and that the community name is "public". I have tried using the password option on registration but still get the same results. I have been able to register a DECstation running Ultrix and a DECserver 90TL all O.K. Can anyone give me some surgestions or tell me what the SNMP module is doing to try and register the bridge. I have also had the bridge powered on and off. This installation is a pilot for a large U.K. customer and the ability to manage the Spider bridge is essential if they are to go ahead with DECmcc. Thanks Terry.

During registration, the SNMP AM V1.1 issues an SNMP request for sysObjectID, sysDescr, and sysUpTime. According to the relevant RFC's these three object values must be returned by all agents. If this request has a successful response, then only is the agent registered. From what you are saying, everything seems to have been set up properly on the SPIDER bridge. You can try issuing a "show snmp --- all ident" command from FCL and see if the above three objects are returned properly. You may also try setting the MOM attributes UDP Timeout and UDP Retries to higher values in case you are just having a timeout problem. Good luck. Rahul.

Are you sure your bridge HAS and SNMP agent? A UCX loop command does an IP Ping which can succeed even if there is no SNMP. Not all TCP/IP devices have SNMP and many that do require a specific revision to use it. s/rob

Just an update. I ran a trace and sent a copy of the SNMP packet to Spider. They agreed it looked O.K. apart from the fact that the packet length field was 2 bytes and they normaly only use a one byte length field. On further investigation they agreed their software was at fault and installed a new update to except the 2 byte length field. All is now working. Terry |
