2089.0. "Manage Apple MacIntoshes via SNMP" by MXOV06::LERIOS () Mon Jan 13 1992 14:00

Hi:

We have a customer who is interested in our solution

in network management (DECmcc). Their network is composed

by about 100 MAC's and some MICROVAX's (3400, 3800) and some

VAX's (4000). Reading a document titled "Announced DECmcc Strategic

Vendors" I saw that is is expected to enter a field test of a

"SNMP AGENT FOR MAC" in early 1992"

Could someone tell me what is the status of this AM?

Is it some additional information about the characteristics (funcionality)

of this access module.

What can offer right now to solve the management of this environment?

ALso they have some MAC's with PATHWORKS but is not the majority.

Thanks in advance, and regards

Julio Lerios (digital Mexico)

An "agent" is not an "AM". The agent is code that runs on each target
system (in your case, the MACs) to respond to queries. An AM is
an access module that sits on the DECmcc director.

Once the MAC has an agent, you should be able to use the standard
SNMP AM to get information from that agent.

Perhaps someone from the SVP group can fill you in on the status.

Erick ,

thanks for your comment about AM & agent,

an sorry by my mistake.

I hope someone can tell me something else

about MAC's agent.

I doubt if anybody will be able to tell you much about Apple's SNMP
agent as I don't believe any such product exists from Apple. Apple
have stated that they are moving to SNMP based management for
Appletalk but their current intent is to run the SNMP agent on top
of the Appletalk stack! An internet MIB was defined recently and it
is available in RFC 1243. Apple were involved in the design of this
MIB but I have not read anywhere that this is the MIB they will use
in their final SNMP product. Does anybody have a more up to date
    status from Apple?

2089.4Apple Management Coming...DELNI::TERZIANThu Jan 16 1992 16:5921
At last check, Apple was working on MIBS for AppleTalk and the Macintosh.
The AppleTalk MIB was largely written by Steven Waldbusser at Carnegie
Mellon University and it's currently an RFC.

The first phase of Macintosh management (by Apple) is scheduled to use the IP
stack. However, most of the installed Macintosh base uses AppleTalk.
Therefore, the next phase is to run SNMP over Apple's Datagram Delivery
Protocol (DDP).

Field test for the first solution hasn't occurred so we don't have
anything to work with yet. This solution should be easily implemented on both
DECmcc/VMS and DECmcc/ULTRIX.

The hope is that the AppleTalk for VMS stack will allow us to implement the
second solution without much pain on DECmcc/VMS. However, DECmcc/ULTRIX may
be another story since at last check a comparable stack didn't exist on ULTRIX.

We should have more info in a couple of months once we receive the field
test software from Apple.

Are there some news about APPLE Management?

I would appreciate any comments
