2052.0. "SNMP AM w/out DNS?" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Wed Jan 08 1992 17:42

I'm running version 1.2 EFT and having trouble registering and accessing
SNMP entities.

One thing that I noted in the SNMP user guide on the registration process
is a note that says that the DNS directory .mcc_ip must be created before
registering any snmp entities. However, I'm not running DNS, I'm using a
local namespace.

Is there a comparable directory that must be set up using a local namespace?

Could this be the source of my problems accessing the SNMP entities?

2052.1Give this a try...BSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Wed Jan 08 1992 19:176
	Try this:

	MCC> REGISTER SNMP foobar SYN foobar.lkg.dec.com

	Note that, in this example, foobar.lkg.dec.com must be in the
	UCX database and *IS* case sensitive, by design.

And if the answer in .1 doesn't help, please post the error message
you receive. BTW, are you running VMS, or ULTRIX?

    Mr. "VMS" Egolf. "UCX Database" has no meaning to Ultrix users.

2052.4Got It FixedMAIL::CLAYTONMerlin Clayton DTN 445-7217Thu Jan 09 1992 16:5914
It appears to be working now, but I'm not sure what was wrong.

I did have the host name registered in the UCX$HOST file, but I registered
it in lower case. I went in to UCX and deleted the specified host, then
added back with a lower case name, and upper case alias. I then deleted the
entity from MCC and added it back with an uppercase entity name and lower
case synonym, and that seemed to work.

So I'm not sure what resolved the problem.

The SNMP documentation should be more explicit relative to case sensitivity,
with specific examples.

Merlin,

That .mcc_ip reference was supposed to have been deleted from the V1.2 manual.
Are you sure you have the V1.2 manual? If so, please let me know what page
that reference is on.

Regarding case sensitvity in UCX, p. A-2 states that the name paramater defaults
to uppercase unless you use quotation marks or the /ALIAS qualifier.

re: -1

You're right.

I had the previous version of the SNMP V1.1 User guide. After copying and
printing the most current version of the Use guide, I see that the "NOTE"
reference has been removed, and the reference to the DNS directory .mcc_ip
is no longer there.

Thamks for the info.
