2010.0. "Ever Heard of These?" by HAAG::HAAG (Dreamin' on MT High Country) Mon Dec 30 1991 17:01

We are working with a local airline that is in ideal candidate for our
EMA products/services. They run opertions worldwide and have about
everything you can imagine installed. They presented us with a little
of vendors/equipment that has management requirements. Can anyone tell
me what we could/will do with the following pieces of vendor equipment.
Some of this stuff I have never even heard of.

    Racal-Milgro CMS (some proprietary system)
Ungerman-Bass (I assume some level with SNMP)
    Verilink (Some PC based system)
    Synoptics (Again SNMP)
    Vitalink (SNMP)
    Netwrok Systems Corp. (SNMP?)
    AT$T DDM1000 (haven't a clue)
Bytex - Unity 50 (No clue)
HMDS (a dial-back security system I never heard of before)
    EMCOM (some PC based system)

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Gene,

Racal Milgo CMS is a propietary management system for the management
of modems. It uses proprietary protocols between the management
system and the modems. It is old technology (ie. 15+ years) although
the hardware may be recent. Also, much of the management functionality
is shared between the management system and the modems. It would need
an external interface (ie. an NMF style interface to interface
it with another management system). The best integration you are
likely to get is to support it via a window.

Ungermann-Bass is a recent convert to SNMP. Most of their older
equipment used proprietary management protocols which were a
variant of XNS and are similar to Novell's IPX. I suspect
that the airline has the older equipment and not the SNMP
    stuff.

Sorry, I can't help with the rest of their eclectic collection.

    thanks wally

we had another meeting with them today and if we can solve their inital
management problems (and I think we can) they have real potential as a
big time MCC customer. Literally 10s of thousands of systems. We'll
    see.

Gene,

If the equipment on your list includes "old" U-B equipment, there could be
some real trouble with it at the low levels.

I tested the Ethernet Station_am against some of this equipment. The U-B
controllers did not respond according to either the Ethernet V2.0 spec or the
IEEE802.3 spec.

On the possible up side, there was some work being done in Europe on a U-B
access module. That is refered to in another note in this conference.

Regards,

Glen R.
