1969.0. "DECmcc/VMS Director License - bundling w/ DECnet ??" by DLO06::BUTTNER (T.C. Buttner - Gov. Sales Support) Thu Dec 19 1991 18:27

	My customer is trying to run the DECmcc director. He is telling me it
is not working because it does not have a PAK loaded. In reading sales update
is states the DECmcc director license is no charge and bundled with DECnet-VAX.
Does that mean the DECmcc director uses (looks for) the DECnet-VAX PAK? Or
is there a separate Director PAK? I found one in the internal VTX-SPD list.

	If there is a separate PAK - does it now ship with DECnet-VAX? If so
did this start as of a certain version of VMS? Is the licensing retro-active
to all DECnet-VAX systems?

	All help appreciated,

		Tom

1969.1Director in NOT bundled with DECnetDELNI::S_LANEFri Dec 20 1991 10:1216

    	When DECmcc V1.0 and V1.1 were announced in July 1990, there was a
    plan in place to have the Director supersede NCL. The Director license
    was to be part of DECnet and the Director was supposed to look for a
    DECnet PAK. For reasons to complex to go into, that plan was not
    implemented. The V1.1 Director software looks for its own PAK and
    nothing else. Therefore, as silly as it sounds, customers must order
    the Director license (even though it's next to free) in order to get a
    PAK that allows them to install the software. That situation will most
    likely remain in place through V1.2.

1969.2For BMS you need a BMS licenseTOOK::R_SPENCENets don't fail me now...Fri Dec 20 1991 11:147
    Also, keep in mind that the Director License only permits use of the
    DECmcc componants that make up the "Director" kit. If they really want
    to use stuff that is part of the DECmcc BMS (Basic Management System)
    (which is the Director + some other parts), they need the DECmcc BMS
    license.

Subj:	RE: DECmcc/VMS Director Licensing - PAK?

Tom,

You have found a problem which we created for ourselves. The license for the
DECmcc Director was going to be bundled with DECnet but it never was and
probably never will be. Therefore, you must order the separate license which
you found. The DECmcc team apologizes for the confusion......but sometimes
things don't work out as planned. We are removing all such references from
new literature and support materials as they are re-done.

Regards,

Dennis
