1966.0. "Domains FM suggestion" by ANOSWS::COMFORT (Spent a little time on the hill) Thu Dec 19 1991 11:28
Hi,
I would like to advance an idea for addition to the domain FM in
some release of MCC - domain synomyns.
The situation at my user site is probably similar to other places. In
the namespace, we are creating a directory structure to store names for
all entities (other than node4 in our case), bridges, translans, phase
V nodes, domains, etc. Using a heirarchical directory structure
presents little or no problem when using the iconic map PM, however
when using the command line interface, command lines get lengthy
and prone to errors. Once setup, domains make MCC a very rich
environment in which to work. An example of a domain name at my
site is as follows:
.europe.domains.germany.munich
where .europe and .domains are dns directories, germany is a domain and
munich is a domain. The domain objects must reside in a subdirectory
so as not to load up the root of the namespace. Since the domain
munich is likely (in our case) to stay unique, it would be real nice to
have a .DOMAIN_SYNONYM directory like the .DNA_NODESYNONYM directory
that would be searched and a softlink resolved if a full DNS name
is not provided on the command line. This is would really shine
when reviewing alarm rules or historian recording stats, etc.
Regards,
Dave Comfort

1966.1 | use symbols. | MCDOUG::MCPHERSON | Scientific progress goes 'Boink!' | Thu Dec 19 1991 12:10 | 5 |
| For FCL you can use symbols. For the map... well you only have to enter the
domain name *once* & refer to it by point & grunt thereafter.
Does that do it for you?

1966.2 | Softlinks from a default directory | BLUMON::SYLOR | Architect = Buzzword Generator | Mon Dec 23 1991 08:55 | 14 |
| The "classic" way to do what you want is to define a subdirectory somewhere
that is yours to play with, say .comfortable, and then define softlinks to
the domain names that you find interesting. It would only be used by you,
so it wouldn't need to be replicated.
Two things would make that easier to use:
1 MCC and DNS should allow the user to define his own "default DNS directory",
instead of only providing a system wide default.
2 MCC should have commands to manipulate DNS, especially to set up softlinks.
This *should* be part of the DNS AM (I hope).
