1944.0. "MIB compiler MIB I or MIB II?" by MEO78B::BARRON () Mon Dec 16 1991 05:41

Is the MIB compiler MIB I or MIB II?

We were asked this by a university today. Apparently, MIB II contains
some changes to parameters that were within MIB I.

    regards,

MIB I and MIB II attribute support is built into the SNMP AM.
The MIB compiler bring private vendor MIB attributes into the
	AM.

I believe the original quesiton in .0 is worded in a slightly confusing
    way.

Let's try rewording that question and see where it leads:
does the MIB translation utility translate MIBs in the
format originally used for specifying MIB I or does it
use the new format used in specifying the latest MIB II?

The answer is the latter - it translates any MIB that conforms to RFC
    1212, aka Concise MIB Format.

However, please note that *both* MIB II and MIB I have been caste in
an RFC1212-compliant format - there is a new RFC # (I forget the actual
number off the top of my head) defining MIB I in the new format that
supercedes (or does it supersede?) the original RFC.

For quite a while now, most people have been using the RFC1212-format
for specifying MIBs - only a few people have held on to the older, more
verbose format, and they'll likely change soon, when they realise the
benefit of using the MIB Translation Utility supplied with DECmcc!
