1895.0. "SNMP problem" by ROM01::PETTINARI () Mon Dec 09 1991 08:43

Trying to register an SNMP entity, I have the following problem:

********************************************************************

MCC> register snmp NV1000

SNMP nv1000
AT 9-DEC-1991 13:49:04

The requested operation cannot be completed
            MCC Unhandled Service Reply = No response from entity.

********************************************************************

NV1000 is the same machine where MCC runs.

The "SHOW SYS" command show the process:
	- INET_ACP
	- UCX$FTP
	- UCX$INET
	- NFS$SERVER

The "SHOW HOST" in UCX show:
	89.2.37.181	NV1000, nv1000

Telnet and loop work correctly.

I have read previous notes but I don't find the solution.

thank you in advance for any help

1895.1SNMP Agent?BSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Mon Dec 09 1991 08:576
	If you are using DECmcc V1.1, then you are on a VMS machine and
	VMS doesn't have an SNMP agent, so you can't manage it.

	If you are using V1.2, please let us know.

1895.3Pls upgrade to DECmcc V1.2BSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Mon Dec 09 1991 09:3820
	Alberto,

	Lets start at the begining...

	You say you can't register the node that you are running DECmcc
	on (via SNMP). You also say your running DECmcc V1.1.

	I'll take your comments as being acurate. This would then mean
	that you are running the old first release of DECmcc for
	Ultrix. Since there is a newer version available (see note 3.*
	towards the end), we would like you to upgrade before we spend
	any time trying to trouble shoot the problem.

	As for SUN workstations, it is my understanding that they do
	not come with an SNMP agent unless you have purchased the
	SUNNET Manager product. Is this running? Are you sure the SUN
	system has an SNMP agent. A successful PING does not indicate
	SNMP is available.

No, in the 1st note, he said that UCX was running on his system.

1895.5UCX does not provide SNMP AgentBSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Mon Dec 09 1991 17:1111
	UCX does not have an SNMP agent.

	So, the answer to your question is NO for V1.1.

	In V1.2, UCX will tell the SNMP AM that it is up if you check
	the status (this uses ICMP, not SNMP). So even in V1.2, you
	can't "manage" it, but it is a UCX issue, not DECmcc. No other
	SNMP management system can manage a VMS system as an SNMP host
	using UCX. Now, some other transport? Or the Common Agent?

	Just so folks don't leap off bridges just yet, UCX V2.0 will provide
	an SNMP agent, and they are near FT. Interested readers may wish
	to cast about in SMURF::CONNECTION.
