Subject: I:DECmcc is Managing the European EASYnet
Congratulations to our country and plant Data Service Managers, their
teams, ENOC, ETTS and Giancarlo who assisted in implementing DECmcc
across our European Wide Area Network. Your tremendous team effort
means that we are now managing the European portion of our network
through Digital's flagship DECmcc product. Your effort provides
Digital's sales and marketing teams with a powerful demonstration of
Digital's EMA leadership.
regards,
Al Albano

This message is from GIANCARLO DUELLA
As discussed at our last Geography Tools Group meeting, find below a
short DECmcc V1.1 implementation status report for Europe. A number of
DECmcc V1.1 installations exist in Europe (from Portugal to Sweden) but
I am going to restrict myself to report on the original scope of the
DECmcc implementation project: Management of the EASYnet WAN circuits.
General:
DECmcc V1.1 is currently implemented and used as a network management
tool in 9 out of our 12 EASYnet areas (even the circuit and routers
serving Area 52, which is Hungary, are managed by DECmcc V1.1).
The three remaining Areas are working on the implementation of DECmcc
V1.1 and will complete it by the 30 November 1991.
What is monitored:
Each Area has set up its DECmcc V1.1 installation and configuration
according to its needs (e.g. circuits ups/downs are reported directly
to IDN operations in REO). This is an overview of what is being
monitored:
o All national and international EASYnet WAN circuits and routers.
o Bridges (e.g. TransLAN, LANbridge), MUXSERVERs and terminal servers
are also systems that are frequently monitored. DECmcc V1.1 will be
monitoring the FDDI ring in REO.
o DECnet/OSI routers in Area 42 (REO) are monitored by DECmcc V1.1.
What is it used for:
o Alarms (circuit availability and congestion/performance, different
types of error, reachability, etc). In some cases, alarms trigger
mail messages and change colors on specific maps.
o Traffic statistics. Two reporting packages (at least) exist in
Europe: One developed in Valbonne by Marc LATOUCHE and the other one
developed in Geneva by Gregory DARMON. Graphs produced by Gregory's
tool can be found in VTX (go to the European VTX page then press
<FIND> GEOMCC).
Note that Gregory has compared statistics produced by DECmcc V1.1 and
NMS, a home developed network management tool. Both statistics are
similar, which gives us some confidence on what DECmcc collects (NMS
statistics validity have already been assessed).
Next steps:
o Early December 1991, announce that the European EASYnet is managed
using DECmcc V1.1. I will write an article for the European Sales
Update publication stressing the DECmcc expertise acquired by the
EASYnet community in Europe.
o ENOC to compare the two reporting packages mentioned earlier and make
a recommendation on which one to use.
o Field test DECmcc V1.2.
o Implement DECmcc V1.2 (in fact upgrade DECmcc V1.1 to V1.2). DECmcc
V1.2 will become, if the field test results are satisfactory, the
recommended integrated data network management platform used on the
European EASYnet (for DECnet Phase IV, DECnet/OSI and TCP/IP).
o As far as suitable, phase out DECmcc MSU.
o Work on a standard DECmcc V1.2 pre-configured kit that could be
distributed through the EASE process (the EASE process is currently
used for distributing standard pre-configured software environment
used on VMS systems, which include the new VMS release, business
applications, etc).
Voil. I hope the above gives you an idea of what is happening and what
is planned to happen in the DECmcc space in Europe. If you have any
question, please contact me.
Cheers,
Giancarlo.

1828.1 | check out the VTX data mentioned in .0 | ENUF::GASSMAN | | Tue Nov 19 1991 11:10 | 8 |
| As you read the base note, notice the pointer to the VTX infobase that
offers statistics. I checked it out, and found the output useful, and
easy to obtain. It's an extension of tools that already exist (CIRCREP
output has been put to VTX files for years) - and shows that MCC can act
as a management server to help replace older tools - with the potential
of a much broader scope.

| If you use the instructions in the previous note, they will not work.
I get into vtx, then I see europe listed under 30, I press that, I do
not see a way to do a find geomcc.
Can someone explain this further.
Sounds like I could use this info if I could get my hands on it.
Thanks Dave

| I figured out how to get to the right place, by doing the following
from vtx
type in - vtx emt -this will put you into the right place,
then do - find geomcc - this will put you into the right conference
This looks very well done. Can someone tell us here in the note file
what you had to do to put the information in the graph form that you
have in VTX?
Thanks Dave

The graphs are produced in the following way:
- The data is EXPORTed by MCC to an RDB database
- Datatrives then produces the required summary reports
- DECgraph is then used to output REGIS graphs
- VTXprep is used to update the VTX database with the graphs

| Re. note 1
I need someone that is familiar with what is going on with the DECmcc
network that is setup in Europe, to give me a call off line or send me
mail so that I can talk to you about a sales opportunity.
