1758.0. "ETHERnim Conversion Not Working" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Mon Nov 04 1991 11:09

I recently tried using the Ethernim data base conversion tool provided with
mcc to help a customer migrate his Ethernim environment to mcc.

The customer's single site LAN environment consists of approx 20 DECnet nodes,
and 80 DECserver 200/300's.

When I ran the MCC_ENIM_CONVERT_MAIN.exe image, I wanted to edit the
MCC_LOAD_ETHERNIM_STATIONS.COM procedure to delete all of the phase IV nodes,
and just keep the terminal servers to register is the Ethernet Station AM.
Upon editing this .COM procedure, I found out that ONLY the Phase IV nodes
were listed as stations, and N-O-N-E of the terminal servers were listed
in the COM procedure. I double checked Ethernim to make sure that the
terminal servers were seen and reachable from the topology map, and indeed
they were. I deleted all Phase IV node from the Ethernim map and kept only
terminal servers on the map and re-ren the conversion procedure. Nothing
at all was entered in the .COM file.

Isn't this conversion procedure supposed to pick up ALL devices registered
in the Ethernim data base?

If not, Why?

If so, can someone give me an indication why it may not be working?

Thanks.

Merlin

Did the DECserver 200/300s in the ETHERnim database have names
assigned to them?
1758.2No Names, Just NumbersMAIL::CLAYTONMerlin Clayton DTN 445-7217Tue Nov 05 1991 09:469
Now that you mention it, No they did not have names assigned.

They were all discovered with the monitor sysid function. They were only
identified by their relative position on the Ethernet segment.

Is this the problem?

1758.3No Names = No Conversion...CHRISB::BRIENENDECmcc Bridge|Station|SNMP Management.Tue Nov 05 1991 11:026
That's the problem.

If an entity doesn't have a name in the ETHERnim database, it won't
get picked up by the conversion utility.

O.K. Time to back up and regroup.

Is there a utility, official or otherwise, that can be used to convert the
TSM configuration data dile into a DECmcc Enet station configuration procedure?

The customer has all of their servers defined in TSM and would like an easy
way to register them as Ethernet stations within MCC. Seems like a reasonable
request since there is about 100 servers currently defined for TSM and the
customer asks, "Why should I have to manually redefine these servers for MCC
when I already spent time and effort doing it for TSM?"

Anyone have any insight on such a utility?

Would it be difficult to convert the MCC_TSM_CONVERT.EXE utility to register
the converted TSM data as Ethernet stations instead of terminal servers?

This is quickly turning into a customer satisfaction issue that I'm trying
to resolve peacefully.

Thanks.

I wrote the TSM conversion utility, but I have no experience with
DECmcc station configuration. I would expect that coming up with an
alternate conversion utility would be very easy. I will have to learn
a little about the station configuration commands.

If you need something immediately (it sounds like you do), send me the
syntax the station AM requires and I'll see what I can do.
