1756.0. "NOATTRIB problem ??" by BELFST::ROONEY (Hugh Rooney) Mon Nov 04 1991 05:02
Hi,
I have a problem with a DECmcc installation that I have been unable to resolve.
The configuration is two workstations both running DECmcc (one is a backup for
the other), the two systems are both DNS servers. The problem occurs when
trying to open a domain, sometimes it works and sometimes it fails with the
error message MCC-E-NOATTRIB, no such DNS attribute. The two systems are both
nameservers (one master and one readonly), the problem is associated with the
readonly copy. If the readonly clearinghouse is switched off everything works
fine. When a domain is opened sucessfully the 'lookups satisfied' counter on the
master clearinghouse increments by 175, when a domain open fails the 'lookups
satisfied' counter on the readonly clearinghouse is incremented by 4.
We had thought that this was being caused by a bad installation, and we have
just rebuilt the two systems completely, however the problem has recurred. The
installation steps are outlined below:
1. Install VMS, DNS and MCC on the first system and run DNS_SET_UP to set up
DNS directories.
2. Install VMS,DNS and MCC on second system
3. Manually do a DNS> COPY DIR 'all directories' CLEAR readonly_ch
and DNS> UPDATE DIR 'all directories'
This was done to make copies of all the directories used by MCC on the
readonly nameserver.
Many Thanks for any help on this problem
Regards
Hugh Rooney

| Niklas.
Thanks for the pointer.
When I installed the system the readonly nameserver was not running, is
this what causes the problem? This is why I had to manually make copies
of the directories.
Does the problem still occur if both nameservers are running when
DNS_SET_UP is run ?

1756.4 | DNS> COPY DIR .. Does not copy MCC objects correctly | TRM::KWAK | | Fri Jan 03 1992 16:38 | 11 |

RE:.0
Please read 1661.13 for explanation.
The fact is that the DNS Control command "COPY DIR ....." DOES NOT copy
the Binary attributes of objects in the directory!!!
MCC stores identifiers, sub-entity info, entity spec, etc. as the
binary attributes of the DNS object.
