1726.0. "Telnet as an enrolled application?" by SUBWAY::REILLY (Mike Reilly - New York Bank District) Mon Oct 28 1991 10:32

    Would it be possible to include Telnet as an enrolled application
    with DECmcc 1.2? The ability to invoke a telnet session while I
    have a SNMP device selected would be a real bonus. Most of the SNMP
    devices require the network manager to telnet to the system to do
    any real management.

1726.1Your definition of "enrolled" is...?TOOK::MCPHERSONi'm only 5 foot one...Mon Oct 28 1991 13:3913
Yes, but be careful about your terminology.
The word "enroll" implies (among other things) that a piece of code is running
as a MM.

I believe you'll be able to fire off whatever application you want from the
"Applications" pull-down menu of the 1.2 Iconic Map PM. There's no reason why
you couldn't add an entry into the resource file for Telnet (asuming you're
running MCC on a system that can *do* TELNET, of course...) This is not an
"enrolled" application, but it's a quick and dirty way to provide
(at least superficial) integration of DECmcc with some other tools...

1726.2Will any info be passed to the application?SUBWAY::REILLYMike Reilly - New York Bank DistrictMon Oct 28 1991 14:369

    Will this application be given any 'hints' as to where I am on the
    iconic map? Will the name of my current domain, or the currently
    selected entity be passed to the application?

1726.3nope, no passing of parameters this time aroundKAJUN::NELSONMon Oct 28 1991 14:5716

Nope, sorry. Unless you want to write some code to interact with a
currently undocumented/unsupported interface, the only option is to fire
off a new application. On VMS, this does a RUN/DETATCHED or some
equivalent. There is a DCL restriction that does not allow passing
parameters.

Application startup is just being test driven in this next version of
DECmcc. Stay tuned to future versions for more features.

    re .1,.2,.3

    Beware... The functionality described in .1 is not intended to be
    public for v1.2. It looks like I will be able to get the code done
    but there is always the (slim) possiblity that it will be traded off at
    the last minute.
