1621.0. "UCX and Common SNMP Agents" by IJSAPL::DUIN (Stef Duin - ACT Utrecht - DTN 838-3124) Wed Oct 09 1991 07:59

Following my previous questions around SNMP agents on VMS, my curiosity is
now narrowed down to a few simple questions:
1 Is the planned UCX-SNMP Agent based on the VMS Common Agent (also
called VMS Extended Agent) and if not, how is it envisaged to
manage the TCP/IP related objects in case the Common Agent is
installed on a VMS system (also running UCX of course) ?
2 Is the SNMP protocol driver (listening via UDP port 161)
implemented in the VMS Common Agent as from the first release,
effectively making it an SNMP Agent ?
I have to advise a customer re. implementation of a private MIB on VMS,
where I have to point out the risks taken when not using 'architected
solutions'; i.e. Common Agent versus a home grown implementation of SNMP
private MIB in the application. If I cannot answer above questions, the
customer will (rightly so) doubt Digital's ability to understand ENTERPRISE
Management issues....
Thanks, Stef Duin, Utrecht Netherlands.

1621.1 | VMS will not support SNMP in first release. | STAR::PITCHER | Steve Pitcher/VMS Engineering | Thu Oct 10 1991 13:52 | 14 |
| VMS' first release of the Common Agent will not implement an SNMP PE. Nor
will UCX's first release use the VMS implementation of the Common Agent.
The two products will coexist on a VMS node with no interaction. UCX will
accept SNMP management requests, and process them through its copy of the
Common Agent. The VMS Common Agent is totally independent of the UCX
Common Agent. (Even their MOLDs do not interact.)
We hope that in a future release of both products that the UCX project will
be able to make use of the VMS Common Agent. There are no specific plans
for this, at this time. If this comes about, I would further hope that
other users would be able to make use of the UCX SNMP PE from SNMP
directors and/or from private applications to access SNMP MOMs running
under the VMS Common Agent.
