1582.1 | RE: Is there a SYNOPTICS AM? | TOOK::JSG | | Thu Oct 03 1991 10:42 | 11 |
| Warren,
1) At this time this is the only planned support for SynOptics AM.
The SynOptics private MIB will be on the SNMP AM V1.1 kit,
which will ship at the end of Oct. (just went to SSB).
2) Good place to ask.
Please let me know if there are any other questions that I can answer.

1582.2 | SNMP AM is it... | CHRISB::BRIENEN | DECmcc Bridge|Station|SNMP Management. | Thu Oct 03 1991 10:46 | 5 |
| To my knowledge, SNMP support for SYNOPTICS is all that DECmcc is
currently providing.
What functions would a SYNOPTICS AM provide that are not provided by
the TCP/IP SNMP AM V1.1 (after loading in the SYNOPTICS MIB, of course).

1582.3 | We don't need a Synoptics AM. | SUBWAY::REILLY | Mike Reilly - New York Bank District | Thu Oct 03 1991 11:15 | 14 |
| Warren,
Synoptics are migrating their user base from their PC based
management station (called a CCA) to a SNMP based management product.
The SNMP mib extensions when loaded into DECmcc will provide your
customer access to the same information as Synoptics use in their new
SNMP based manager. What will be missing is the user application
which takes the results from the SNMP queries and draws the pretty
pictures of the concentrators with the lights flashing etc. I have
heard that Synoptics have demonstrated this user interface on our
MSU station using it's snmp API, and local Synoptics reps have
mentioned that this feature may be soon playing on a DECmcc station.
I'll leave it others here to confirm/deny that rumor.

1582.4 | a different style of integration | ENUF::GASSMAN | | Thu Oct 03 1991 13:17 | 17 |
| Indeed, Synoptics have ported their application to ULTRIX, and by using
the "user customized menu" feature of MSU, their application may be
called from MSU. Digital has no resell agreement with Synoptics for
this as a product, but MSU is also used as a service product, and the
Synoptics piece will be used for some NETsupport contracts. It will
also be available for demo at Interop next week. There have been
discussions about the need for showing simulations of actual products
in an integrated product. The market clearly wants it - and are voting
with their dollars. Perhaps when Digital enters the smarthub business,
a synoptics type of product will emerge, that can also handle Synoptics
and Cabletron type of products as well. If you are in a tatical sales
situation, sell MSU, and contact the NETsupport folks about getting the
Synoptics piece installed. There is no smooth path to that yet, but
if enough people get it working, we'll figure out how to make the deal
with Synoptics to make it easier.

1582.5 | Thanks for the answers | DENVER::ARCHER | Warren C. Archer | Thu Oct 03 1991 15:30 | 10 |
| I would like to thank everyone so far for the quick responses. The
information is greatly appreciated. I will also try and talk to some
of the SYNOPTICS folks locally to see if I can find out what's their
understanding of what is going on. I'll post a reply letting everyone
know what I find out.
Thanks,
Warren

Because it runs on Ultrix, this should also be usable from the
DECmcc V1.2 Ultrix platform, called form the Iconic Map PM. We
plan to be testing this during the up coming field test.

1582.7 | Any more information? | RADBOX::ANDERSON | | Wed Dec 04 1991 18:37 | 15 |
| I was wondering if the person in .4 has played with the synoptics
application on an ULTRIX system? If so, does it require the MSU
software to be installed and is it an X based application?
I have a customer that is very interested. They will be purchasing
the DECmcc Station and TCP/IP AM, but would still like to have the
nice Synoptics device graphical interface. I was hoping that if
we dont plan on providing this on VMS the user could install it on
their ULTRIX system and access it from there.
Has there been any update on whether there are plans by us or
synoptics to provide this on VMS? If so the customer is definately
willing to wait otherwise this other option may be very viable.
Thanks.

1582.8 | re: .4 - Synoptics PM? | TRCC1::PIETRONIGRO | | Mon Apr 13 1992 19:18 | 10 |
| I need an update as to the status, if any, of a possible Synoptics PM
that would display their hubs in a nice graphical format. In .4, John
mentioned that this was going to be tested with the DECmcc for Ultrix
product? Was it tested, and if so, does it work? Will we have a flashly
GUI for Synoptics, Cisco, and our hubs under DECmcc sometime in the
future?

Joanne

1582.9 | MSU will support this for now | SKIBUM::GASSMAN | | Tue Apr 14 1992 08:30 | 10 |
| Synoptics will announce later this month that they have ported their
'flashy' application to Digital, HP, and IBM platforms. In the case of
Digital, it's the MSU platform. Synoptics very very much wanted to be
on the MCC platform too - but it was far from clear how they would go
about doing it. The MCC platform needs to publish a clear and simple
method for loose integration, along with hints of how tighter
integration could occur later. Most vendors are just looking for a
rich launching API, along with a low level API to issue SNMP calls to.

1582.10 | synoptics from director | TOOK::CALLANDER | MCC = My Constant Companion | Wed Jun 10 1992 15:00 | 8 |
| The synoptics application can also be launched from inside of
DECmcc/Director as well, and with the user of the snmp
AM and the Alarms and Notification services, you can also
monitor traps from the synoptics boxes and have rules and
icon changes on the map based on the use of their mibs through
the SNMP AM.
