1429.0. "no mail notification on alarm ??" by MARS02::THOMAS () Mon Sep 02 1991 10:26
In my customer, I installed DECMCC BMS V1.1 on a VS 3100 to manage his large
DECNET WAN. The heart of the backbone is a VAX in the head office with DDCMP
and DLM circuits to the major remote sites, where there are routers or VAXes.
To manage the network in a real time fashion, i used the event mechanism and
SINK NODE to report circuit problem that occurs on the central VAX; so i
defined alarms on the DECNET EVENT 4.7 and 4.10 on each (10) circuit (down->up
and up->down) of this VAX. When the alarm occurs, i use an alarm fired procedure
that sends mails to 2 operators on a remote system and activates a backup
circuit. The procedure is based on the MCC_ALARMS_MAIL_ALARM.COM.
Last nigth, one circuit had a pb, and i can see a lot of 4.7 and 4.10 events
in the OPERATOR.LOG of the VAX STATION. There were between 2 seconds
and 2 hours between a circuit DOWN and a ciruit UP. Sometimes with DECMCC, i had
both (down and up), sometimes only 1 (down or up) and 1 time no event mail
notifications.
The pb is that that all the network events on the central VAX have been reported
to my VAX STATION (i can see them in the OPERATOR.LOG file), but some mail
notifications have not been sent to the operators. There was nobody in
front of the station, so i have no idea about the colour of the entity
and i don't know if the backup circuit was activated.
There was no other activity on the station, so i don't think that there is a
CPU power pb.
Any idea about the absence of those mails?
Regards

| I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you. I can only suggest
that you look in the error log file to see if you find anything of
interest there.

1429.2 | delayed delivery via nmail? | GOSTE::CALLANDER | | Sat Sep 07 1991 09:59 | 10 |
| A quickie question here,
did you have the mail set up to use nmail or regular mail.
In a situation where you are looking to report potential
lose of communication, nmail would be the preferrable
delivery system, allowing you to have delayed delivery
if the connection is lost.

.1
I am going to investigate the log files.
.2
I use VMS mail; you are rigth that NMAIL would be a better solution.
