1404.1 | fcl was more the goal | TOOK::CALLANDER | Jill Callander DTN 226-5316 | Wed Sep 04 1991 10:16 | 12 |
| IU know it would be nice to use the PC to get to the windows interface,
but use of the FCL for remote access was more the goal in V1.1. We
simply did not have the resources to try all potential configurations.
What I would suggest is for remote access use the FCL forms mode (this
gives you recall, scrollability, print and save functions, as well as
context sensitive help). Then when you have the time, try loading in
the PCdecwindows and give MCC a try.
I will also forward your note to an ex-mcc person over in the pc world and
see if he knows of anyone who has tried it.
Let us know if you get it to work, and how.

FCL is a no-brainer. Just get a decent terminal emulator for the laptop.
(There are scads of them out there...) The FCL forms mode is a pretty good
compromise between 'hard-core-cli-stuff' and 'pointy-clicky-menu-stuff' in
terms of "ease of use" for the uninitiated. However, I find that after a
while, the FORMS stuff can sorta get in the way, *once* you know what you need
to do (It's *great* when you're using some new xM and fumbling around with
syntax.) I would hope that whomever is being called uopn to dial into a
DECmcc management system would *already* have a good idea of what they needed
to do anyway...
I don't see how you'll *ever* get the Iconic Map PM to work with a remote
laptop PC running PC DECwindows UNLESS:
a) you're running async DECnet (ugh) on the laptop to handle the
DECwindows transport...
b) you're running SLIP on the PC and the DECmcc system to handle the
DECwindows transport...
c) you've got a really high-speed modem on the laptop (ABSOLUTE min. of 9600
bps) for either option A or B
d) you've got a really *hot* laptop (386/33 minimum) with mucho memory,
hard disk and a crisp VGA display w/enuf resolution for
PC DECwindows (don't know what that is...)
e) or you've got a *lot* of patience, using *any* of the above
options... %^)

| Placing the brain in blabber mode ....
use Internet PPP to connect from the PC to the MCC system. A procedure
pulls all the relevant files across pertaining to topology icons etc...
then we run a proprietary protocol over PPP to talk to a server on MCC
that provides IPC (inter process communication) to the Iconic MAPS PM
or the big K (kernel), so you can do the clik-pop-up jazz on the PC
and have the interface data over the "so called" slow link and
all the heavy windows manipulation is done in the PC
-- sound interesting ?
Amrit (really serious about this stuff)

Way cool!
This sounds really neat! Where is there some more info on
<what|how> you're doing w/the iconic map data? I'm sure some other
people would like to hear more...
I suppose I should have put more hope into the remote pointy-clicky
stuff... Guess I'm getting a litte jaded. ;^)
