1367.0. "CMIS/CMIP conformance ?" by CLARID::PATEL (We'll get it right on the night) Wed Aug 21 1991 09:45

The following is the questions and answers going on between the bidding team
and the customer for a large project with SWIFT. The problem I have is that I
don't have at hand the answer to the last question by the customer.

YOUR HELP IN POINTERS OR DIRECT ANSWERS WOULD BE VERY
             APPRECIATED.

CUSTOMER Q - Indicate how the proposed architecture aligns with the OSI
management standards of the NM Forum NM conformance requirements
             Lower layers
             Higher Layers
             Objects
             Management application services

DEC Answer - Lower layers
Digital conforms with OSI management at the lower layers either
             with X.25 or IEEE 802.3

             Higher Layers
Digital will make our CMIP AM compliant with the NMF, when the
             standards are stabilized

             Objects
The CMIP AM conforms with the NMF specifications for managed
objects for naming and addressing. A subset of objects useful for
managed networks will be supported (IE network, equipment,
             function, service, circuit, location)

             Management application services
All of the Management applications services will be supported.

CUSTOMER Q - Please expand on conformity of Digital CMIS/CMIP implementation
with ISO and NM/Forum standards/specifications, What is the
relevance of DECnet V support in a Phase IV environment ?

             Higher Layers
Digital will make our CMIP AM compliant with the NMF, when the
             standards are stabilized
<<< Digital will provide an IS version CMIP AM whenever we have
<<< real manageable objects to manage with it. NMF objects are
<<< at the current version only intended to demonstrate a
<<< technical capability. When they define objects that represent
<<< real manageable objects such as protocol layers, file systems,
<<< applications, we will provide products to manage those objects.

             Objects
<<< V1.2 of DECmcc provides for NMF conformant Events/Alarms and
<<< circuit objects. These represent useful management objects
<<< which can be useful at present. Additional objects will be
<<< provided in future releases as part of DECmcc or PNMP.

The CMIP AM conforms with the NMF specifications for managed
objects for naming and addressing. A subset of objects useful for

with ISO and NM/Forum standards/specifications, What is the
relevance of DECnet V support in a Phase IV environment ?

<<< When a CMIP conformance suite exists the IS CMIP
<<< implementations (which already exist by the way) will
<<< be verified for conformance. DEC's NPACE organization
<<< will be an official test laboratory and they are located
<<< on the same floor of LKG that we are.

<<< The relevance of DNA5 in DNA4 environment is out of context
<<< with the rest of the discussion. It is a temporary
<<< anomoly that exists. We had to support DNA5 entities (objects)
<<< from a Director (Manager) that was resident on a DNA4 VMS
<<< system. One of the features of DNA5 is layer independence.
<<< As long as we can establish a useful transport connection
<<< we can manage DNA5 entities from DNA4 nodes. It was not
<<< actually anticipated but it was always inherent in the
<<< architecture. I guess you could say the relevance is that
<<< it demonstrates the flexibility of layer independence.
