Hello, I've heard about a VMS Extended Agent (Common Agent). They said it is a kind of Access Module with more management protocols, and with its own API and with its own MIR. Can anybody tell me more about this. Regards. Henk.

1343.1 | Common agent = NAS management services | ENUF::GASSMAN | Thu Aug 15 1991 11:43 | 20
The common agent - also called NAS management services, is actually a pretty neat concept. It's NOT on the management side, but on the managed object side... It provides a CMIS like interface to objects to be managed - such as decnet, osi, tcp/ip, and even things like applications. It's probably the best way for an application to become 'ema compliant'. A MSL is written for the object, and compiled into the common agent. The common agent can then accept snmp, rpc, or cmip protocols, convert the requests into CMIS, and deliver it to the application. Other protocol engines can be added. On the marketing slide we use, the common agent looks like the nuke picture we use for MCC - so it's positioned as similar, but for use on the managed side. Ideally, the MSL written for the common agent will be at some point readable by MCC - but from what I understand there are some tweeks that must be made first.... but the possibilities are interesting to think about. A transaction system or mailbus application can write up their MSL, use the common agent, and sell that MSL and possibly some vertical appliations to go with it to customers for use on their MCC director. bill

.1> The common agent - also called NAS management services, is like saying bicycle - also called transportation services I don't mean that the CA is not useful, but NAS management services are much more than the CA. MCC is also in the picture! Colin |
