I'm working on a project here in France with a major telecoms manufacturer (both national and international) who will select a network management platform for his whole line of products. The contenders are DECMCC and OPENVIEW. The prospect develops both sophisticated switches destined for PTTs and a whole line of X25 products for private and public networks. We have been asked to estimate the configuration required for: A single network management platform under ULTRIX with 20 attached graphics terminals capable of managing a 500 node network. Extrapolating a current PTT installation, there will be on average 1.15 events per second and 11.5 events at peak to be processed by the platform. The management protocols will be based on CMIS/CMIP. Can anyone give me an idea of the hardware platform that is required and memory requirements (ball park figures with reserves where necessary and what your figures are based on)? The project represents hundreds of platforms per year. We are in contact with PNMP. Thanks for your help Ian Gairns

Ian, I just wantde to post this note so you know where we stand on this... I'm checking around to see what the people here think. The bottom line is that we don't have any performance or capacity number on our Ultrix system at this time. While I would hope that a DECstation 5000 with some amount (ie:32M) of memory should be a good platform that could grow (more memory and more disk), we just don't know yet. What is your time frame for needing your response? How firm does it have to be. What is HP recommending? We'll be back intouch. JCE | |||||

John, Sorry, but we don't have the HP figures. The customer will choose between the two competing platforms wihin the next two weeks and he is pressing us for information for the end of this week. As the customer will use our figures to cost the product, and will use them in an future contract, we cannot afford to be wildly out, even though he accepts that netwok management is not an exact science. Can you give me an idea of the disk requirements for DECmcc on a risc platform (basic product and database)? What reservations would you recommend that we write into our answer. |
