I hope this is the appropriate conference - I certainly think it
ultimately should be.
My customer is the Dutch railroad and is planning to have VAX/VMS
computers in at least eighteen regions, all communicating with one
another (with DECmessageQ the highly probably transport mechanism).
While I have certainly recommended DECmcc as the general network, etc.
monitoring and control mechanism, they are also worried about remote
system management in general (it is highly unlikely that each region
will have/need a well-trained system manager).
I have found SPDs for Remote System Manager (RSM - V2.3) and DEC Remote
Operation Service (DECros - V1.0), but would like to obtain more
information. Does anyone know of a suitable Notes conference(s)?
Furthermore, there seems to be at least some common point between
DECros and DECmcc in that they both use ASN.1 in places. Is there any
real relationship to DECmcc - now or in the future (I know, no futures
- but maybe thoughts?)
Thanks,
Peter

DECros is planned to provide CMIP for customers who want to write
their own network management applications. DECmcc on the other hand
layers an access module on top of a protocol implementation so that
customers do not have to write their own management applications.
Both contain implementations of CMIP. Some future DECmcc components
may used DECros as a component.

I tried implementing CMIP as a ROS application once, and found that
there was remarkably little benefit in this approach. Why? Because
the heart and soul of CMIP are the entity (managed object) instance,
and the attribute/argument list. None of these things can be described
to ROS, because in an extensible director (or agent) we don't know
what attributes exist until runtime.
