1225.0. "update from user land" by DUNDEE::CLEARY (A deviant having fun...") Wed Jul 10 1991 02:00

This arrived from the comp.os.vms newsgroup (and a few others) in the
last couple of days. The first response to it was `what's DECmcc ?'.
Luckily it was followed by a resonable thumbnail sketch. Pity about
the MSU confusion, but I guess we did that to ourselves.

I've been corresponding with a number of people who have an interest in
DECmcc. We would like to set up a news group for the purpose of discussing
DECmcc and issues around DECmcc in a public forum.

There is a good chance that we will want to set up a mail gateway so that
those who don't have easy access to news will be able to get onboard as well.

At the present time, DECmcc is primarily used in relation to network management
but is being extended to cover the entire system management/network mgt
domain. If DEC succeeds with their plans to extend the platform to run
on non-DEC hardware the scope will go beyond VMS and Ultrix and DECnet
-- in fact this is already happening with the introduction of the
DECmcc MSU package.

Suggestions have been made for a newsgroup name:

vmsnet.networks.decmcc

vmsnet.management.decmcc

vmsnet.networks.management.decmcc

I've already gotten feedback that there are folks inside of DEC who are
interested in participating in a news group about DECmcc.

What do you think about creating a newsgroup for this topic? Other ideas
for the name for the newsgroup? Your favorite from the suggestions so far?

There's a possibility that this could be the beginning of a new working
group in the DECUS Networks SIG. If you're interested in the formation
of a working group related to DECmcc, please send me email.

Please post followups to VMSNET.ADMIN or email me directly at the address below.

Olivetti has signed up as an OEM and will be porting DECmcc to
SVR4 and be running DECmcc on the 386 and 486 based PCs.

Digital retains the rights to the SVR4 sources and will market
DECmcc SVR4 on other vendor's hardware.

I don't know if any of you have seen this already elsewhere, thought it
might be of interest to some of those on the list. It is to me, so I'm
passing it along.

I apologise to those who may have seen this elsewhere,
but there seems to be a fair bit of interest so I thought
it best to announce it to a wider audience.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

this is an announcement of a new mailing list for discussing
the issues involved in mapping and visualising computer
networks.

With the growth in complexity of computer networks, mapping is
becoming more important as a visualisation technique and for
finding anomalies. There are numerous commericial and public
domain tools available but many have serious limitations and
are often specific to a single group of protocols.

RIPE (Reseau IP Europeen) has set up a working group for studying
the problem, this mailing list is intended as a forum for wider
discussions.

To join, send mail to <[email protected]>
to contribute send mail to <[email protected]>
archives on mcsun.eu.net:~ftp/ripe/archives/ripe-map
Some of the issues for discussion are listed here,

Auto-discovery,
automatically discovering the topology of computer networks.
How can this be done, what standards need changing to do this
	efficiently.

Automatic Layout,
Automatically laying out (or untangling) maps so that they look
good on in a window or on a piece of paper.

Features,
which feaures of existing tools are the best what else is wanted.

Formats,
in what format should maps be stored and how should they be
	distributed.

Model,
What database model should be used. Should it	be concerned
purely with the graphic represention or should it try to model
the underlying networks. Different types of map suitable for
different purposes, what are the catagories.

Other Tools and Standards,
how can existing tools and protocols be tied in with a mapping
	database.

Symbols,
Standard symbols for representing network entities.
How should the status of such entities be drawn.

Regards,
James Barr
