Hi, Lately I am observing some very strange DNS problems with DECmcc. Lookup's on domains sometimes work, sometimes do not work. I will include a log below. I am running my own private namespace on the management station, no replica's of clearinghouses on other systems. I have tried alreday to rebuild the DNS with the REBUILD command but to no avail. If I do a wildcard show ( MCC> SHOW DOMAIN * ALL IDENTIFIERS) I get the error message: MCC Routine Error = %MCC-E-NOATTRIB, no such DNS attribute Any suggestion/help is welcome, since the only alternative I see is to recreate the namespace and reregister the entities contained within. 1150.1 | rebuild won't help | CLAUDI::PETERS | Mon Jun 17 1991 15:59 | 12
Rebuild the DNS directory doesn't help when the is only one clearhinghouse, hence only one directory replica. Are you sure that there is only one copy of the root directory? Please insert a DNS> SHOW CHAR DIR . If there are multiple clearinghouses with dir . and they have mismatched timeszones or time out of synchronization then you will get that error. The reason it works sometimes is because the client rotates though its cache of know servers and picks a good server, then a bad server. /Claudia

RE: -1 That did it, although not the first time. What happened was the following: A while back I had a copy of the root directory on another system, and due to various reasons I decided to set the convergence to LOW. About a week ago, I removed the readonly clearinghouse, but left the convergence to LOW. So far, so good. However, my MCC station/DNS space is set up in a way that nodes belonging to different groups are in seperate directories (eg .ACT.node, .UTO.node etc.) and I started experimenting with moving this entries to seperate clearing- houses. Here is where I did wrong. The new clearinghouses turned out to be a copy of the root directory instead of just the .ACT or .UTO. Probably with the convergence LOW that gave the problems. The DNS> SHOW CHAR DIR . after a few tries revailed the fact that there were multiple copies. After stopping and deleting the newly created clearinghouses, everything is back to normal again. So thanks a lot for your help. Regards, Frank Kuijper |
