Olivetti and DEC Announce Licensing Accord for Network Management
Monte Carlo, June 3, 1991
Olivetti Systems & Networks and Digital Equipment Corporation announced
an agreement whereby Olivetti will port Digital's DECmcc* technology to
System V Release 4.0 under worldwide license.
Under the terms of the agreement Olivetti acquires a five-year license
to Digital's standards-based Enterprise Management Architecture (EMA)*
product. Items licensed include the DECmcc Director and related
management applications and functions and Digital's Concert Multithread
Architecture. Future Olivetti PC LAN and network management products
will be based on this technology.
DECmcc technology provides a set of network-management applications and
common interfaces enabling users to link heterogeneous, multivendor
environments. Businesses can thus manage their networks, from
corporate-wide to local area, using a single architecture and product
with a resulting reduction of operating costs.
"Network management has been a key, long-term sector of Olivetti's
strategy and after evaluating a number of different options, we decided
that Digital's EMA and DECmcc technology provided the best enhancement
to our existing offering, thus further assuring our customers' present
and future requirements in distributed networks and systems
environment," said Elserino Piol, Managing Director of OS&N.
"This announcement underscores the open character of one of Digital's
core technologies and its open business practice of working with other
industry leaders to offer all customers the best possible solution,"
said William R. Johnson, Jr., Digital's vice president of Corporate
Marketing Planning.
Olivetti Systems and Networks is part of the Olivetti Group based in
Ivrea, Italy. With revenues of more than $7.5 billion, Olivetti is the
leading European-based supplier of personal computers and is ranked
among the top ten IT companies worldwide.
Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Massachusetts,
is the leading worldwide supplier of networked computer systems and
services. Digital offers a full range of computing solutions and
systems integration for the entire enterprise -- from the desktop to
the data center.
