A customer is asking me how DECmcc can be used to manage a device that just speaks LAT on the network. Specifically, he is interested in ways to manage X-terminals (VT1200s), and Apple PCs running LAT. He perceives the need to gather counter information, set parameters and characteristics, build alarms rules to determine failures, generate reports, etc. Does digital have any planned strategy fot managing X-terminals? Another question he has is whether or not there will be the capability to test and isolate problems on the physical media and attached transceivers whether it be thick wire, thinwire, UTP, etc. He's looking for similar functions performed by TDR test devices, and in fact says that MTI has this capability with the LANCE management software. Anything on the burner here? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Merlin

NMS, the DECmcc core technology group, has no plans for a LAT AM. The business strategy is that if a particular product or set of products needs MCC support, it is their responsibility to write an AM. I would refer your question to the development groups for X-Terminals and Apple PC development groups. This is very similar to the operating systems. If you need a driver for a particular kind of peripheral to sell it, the people who productize the peripheral provide the driver. There are exceptions. Operating Systems are very particular about their Disk drivers and terminals drivers and insist on providing a polished product in this space. DECmcc also has its exceptions. They are CMIP and SNMP. However, LAT is not primary to DECmcc. If someone in the X-terminals or Apple development groups would like help getting started, NMS will share code and provide consulting support for the startup if it is negotiated. Many groups have and are currently doing this. wally matthews DECmcc AM development manager | |||||

The request for management of X-window terminals also has come from the NY stock exchange. Their requests are going to require quite the sophisticated agent on the remote terminal! bill |
