Note 15.0 DECmcc vs xxxxxx ? 3 replies
MAIL::CLAYTON "Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217" 13 lines 11-APR-1991 09:16

Does anyone have any current information on DECmcc vs. the competition. I'm
interested primarily in HP's Openview, AT&T UNMA, and of course Netview.
Everytime we start telling the DECmcc.EMA story to customers the questions
come up as to how we differ from these competing products. I don't have
a good answer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm preparing to do a network
management seminar for approx 50 customer accounts in two weeks.
Thanks.
Merlin

The Datapro survey on NetMaster talks about its position against
Netview and AT&T. Although not directly on the subject of DECmcc, the
comments may be useful.
I am myself in search of such information so anybody out there who can
help please respond.
A couple of weeks ago I attended a seminar done by an external
consultant who commented on Accumasters lack of higher level Network
Management i.e. upper layers of the layered model approach. AT&T does
a good job of the lower level data link and transport but beyond that
at the Systems level things get a bit fuzzy.

I would recomend the article "Enterprise Management Vendors Shoot It
Out" in the journal Data Communications International Nov. 1990, pp.
78-96.
You find there a comparison of IBM Netview, AT&T UNMA, HP Openview,
SunNet Manager and EMA/DECmcc.

I can't speak for the other vendor products, but DECmcc in the future
will talk to NetView(IBM) and NETMASTER(SCI) to provide management
of resources into IBMs "Glass House". If your going to be talking to
all those customers we might want to get you to the product manager
to discuss what we can disclose now. Let me know.
