I have a customer who currently has DECmcc (on a VAXstation). They are extending their LAN, and considering optical concentrators from DuPont (LANone), Chipcom (ONline), and Cabletron (MMAC). All three vendors support SNMP for management. The specific questions they have are: 1 - will their DECmcc station be able to communicate with the concentrators of all three vendors? Will they be able to do things like obtain statistics and control ports? Is it safe to say that there are no DECmcc Access Modules for any of these products, but that DECmcc will be able to manage these boxes via SNMP/MIB II which will be supported in DECmcc V1.2? 2 - Of all three vendors (DuPont, Cabletron, Chipcom), which one would we recommend as "most manageable" from DECmcc (or most desireable)? ...Chipcom? 3 - What is the current schedule for V1.2 (IFT, EFT, FCS)? I would appreciate some clarification on these questions. Regards, Pat Hymes

Re question #3, pls see the appropiate phase review document pointed to in note 1001.0 Regarding your SNMP questions, I've forwarded to the SVP people for their reply.
1021.2 | RE: DuPont, Cabletron, Chipcom SNMP management | TOOK::JSG | Mon May 20 1991 11:40 | 32
1 -- The version of the SNMP AM that is released with DECmcc V1.2 will be able to communicate with all devices that support TCP/IP SNMP. The AM will support MIB I, MIB II, the six generic traps, and private MIB extensions. The SNMP AM will provide for the loading of private MIB extensions at the customer site. Furthermore we plan to provide ASN.1 files of the private MIB extensions for many popular devices. At this time we plan to include both Chipcoim and Cabletron MIBs on the kit. The AM will be able to do anything that is specified in the MIBs and allowed by the SNMP agent. A particular vendor's point product network management system may offer better management of their product then will DECmcc at this time, but it will not solve the enterprise management problem. As more applications for DECmcc come out this will be less of an issue. Some of the private MIBs that are included will be tested, but the private MIB extensions will NOT be supported. Obviously problems with the SNMP AM will be supported, but if the problem is with a vendor's private MIB, agent or device then it will not be supported. There are just to many private MIBs that change to often for anyone to keep up with all of them. We expect that services may choose to offer an SNMP support service. 2 -- I don't have enough data/experience at this time to say who is the most manageable. As to the most desireable, our group is non-exclusive and not envolved in the marketing of these products, so it is not appropriate for meto answer this one. JonG
