998.0. "Director for Ultrix" by SUBWAY::REGAN (Riding on the wind!!!) Thu May 09 1991 12:02

Is the MCC director for Ultrix in field test yet? If so, will the kit
location be posted for us to gain access in the next couple of weeks?

Also, one of the messages that DEC has been giving customers is that
we're becoming a "software company", so to speak. Will this Ultrix
based Director be able to run on a SUN? Are there any plans for the
MCC director to be able to run on any other Non-DEC platforms, DOS or
    OS/2 etc.

    Thanks.

There is no movement to put DECmcc on a SUN platform... nobody is
willing to give up any functions to spend the time to do that. What is
going on however, is effort to make sure that MCC will run on the OSF/1
and ACE platforms... as that becomes an industry standard (hopefully)
the issue of running on SPARC becomes less important. However, HP did
make some points in the industry by porting one of their OPENview
platforms to SUN. While it's an issue, there are plenty of others that
    take priority!

The Ultrix EFT is late. There are several reasons, but no need
to go into that now. Our first OEM received their Ultrix FT
kit this past Tuesday (May 7th). We are currently planning on
having FT kits available for our other sites either tomorrow or
early next week - it depends on how this current kit build
	looks.

This kit has some limitations and we won't be making it
generally available internally. We expect to have an updated
version in about 3 - 4 weeks. This will be available to
anybody internally. Keep on eye out for the announcement.

	As for Sun and such...

We will be ordering a Sun workstation as well as an HP
workstation. We are under negotiations with a vendor in Europe
to port DECmcc to another software/hardware platform.

You will see DECmcc running on non-Digital hardware. The
"when" and "which one(s)" are the real questions.
