969.1 | not for the domain global entity | POLE::LEMMON | | Thu May 02 1991 13:35 | 5 |
| Currently there isn't a system wide synonym mechanism. It is
up to the MM to support them. There are no plans to implement
synonym support for the domain global entity.

969.2 | Creating a synonym for a domain | CLAUDI::PETERS | | Mon May 06 1991 16:48 | 14 |
| Although what you really want is unsupported by DECmcc, you can use the DNS$CONTROL program
to create a LINK (which is what synonyms are anyway).
DNS> CREATE LINK abc DESTINATION xxx.yyy.zzz
Note that the above LINK is created in the root of the namespace. So you
want to be careful of the number of these you create. Alternatively you
can create a directory with a short name and use it for the links.
DNS> CREATE LINK a.bc DESTINATION xxx.yyy.zzz
I tried it in my configuration and it works fine.

969.3 | What about "masking" or "hiding" in future DECmcc releases? | CUJO::HILL | | Tue May 07 1991 01:12 | 16 |
| Thanks, Claudia, I'll give it a try.
By the way, what I am really interested in providing for my customer
is the ability to be able to do a "FIND" in the ICONIC MAP for a
specific entity without having to specify a long and confusing name. I
also want to refer to the entity on the map using the synonym for
simplicity's sake. I understand that a form of "masking" will be
possible with a future version of DECmcc.
Example: The entity .o.abcd.west.MYNODE would have the
.o.abcd.west portion of its name "masked" or hidden and
would reveal only .MYNODE on the map, but would I still
be able to "FIND" the entity without having to type the
entity's full name?

| The only "masking" being considered for v1.2 is to display the
rightmost simplename of the name. If the user wants to see
the entire instance name they can do a "show identifiers" on it.
The Find operation was enhanced a bit to allow for a partial
match. (e.g., "Find ABC will match on .abc or .xxx.yyy.abc or
.abc.xyz, or...)

Actually, what is being planned is to, by default, display
the rightmost simple name for every entity on the map.
If the user wants to expand the name of a given entity
he can MB2 the entity and see menu items which say
something like "Expand Name, Expand all name " or whatever.
When the user selects on of the options, the map will be updated.
