944.1 | Its coming... | BSYBEE::EGOLF | John C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874 | Tue Apr 23 1991 11:59 | 12 |
| We are showing DECmcc on MIPS Ultrix in Munich Germany right
now to the OSF code evaluation team.
Field test of DECmcc will probably be in 3 weeks. We are
slightly behind were we would like to be, but the effort to win
OSF was needed and it took away from the product time.
The Ultrix version of DECmcc will be both Vax and RISC. There
may be a week gap in the release for FT if it helps get a kit
out earlier.

944.2 | Will it work with MSU? | RDGENG::PRATT | | Wed Apr 24 1991 10:44 | 6 |
| Hi,
Will it be possible to run MSU and Ultrix MCC on the same workstation at the
same time?

944.3 | Hopefully, those tests will be done before long | ALLZS::MORRISON | The world is a network | Wed Apr 24 1991 16:02 | 11 |

Good question. Part of it depends on whether MSU uses the ULTRIX Data Link
Interface (DLI) routines. DECmcc does for the Ethernet & Bridge AMs, and
from what I know about MSU (not much, admittedly), there could be some
potential protocol overlap there. Perhaps Will McGrath can answer for MSU.
In any case, it's something that should be tested once the ULTRIX version
of DECmcc is stable, so that we KNOW the answer.

944.4 | hasn't been tested | TOOK::W_MCGRATH | DTN 226-5075 | Wed Apr 24 1991 18:32 | 17 |
| MSU uses well-known sockets. The user defines unique well-known
sockets for nmsregd and nmsalarmd. I believe the polling daemons use
the UDP socket directly.
MSU, like MCC, uses SQL. All MSU tables are stored in the MSU db, and
shouldn't conflict with MCC -- but there may be some tweaking needed
for number of communication servers started, etc... Nothing that seems
like it should conflict.
In short, though no interoperability testing has been done, I can't see
any major conflicts. We have both up on a uVAXII here, so maybe there's
some unplanned confirmation that there shouldn't be any problems. But
it is something that should (will?) be tested.

944.5 | Internal Ultrix mcc kit - on VAX Ultrix? | ESCROW::LANG | | Tue Jul 16 1991 10:04 | 13 |
|
For the internal field test update, which is DECmcc 1.1 functionality,
on Ultrix, available now, (RE: note 3.82), is this available on
VMS Ultrix or RISC Ultrix. And...are both going to be supported for
the 1.2 Release?
I assume if we use VAX stations connected to a VAX Ultrix server, for
development, this is an impossible configuration if the MCC PM only
supports RISC!
thanks,
Bonnie

944.6 | Au contraire... | TOOK::DOUGHERTY | | Tue Jul 16 1991 14:12 | 11 |
| re: .5
Bonnie,
As mentioned in .1, DECmcc for Ultrix will be supported on both
VAX and RISC Ultrix. The reasons for pre-release/demonstrations
on RISC is because of equipment availability and fewer integration
problems. These integration issues are being addressed as they arise.
Stay tuned...

944.7 | rics vs vax | TOOK::CALLANDER | Jill Callander DTN 226-5316 | Wed Jul 17 1991 10:55 | 4 |
| Just intersted in more feedback. Management has asked around a bit and
we were told that ultrix/vax was not a top priority item (read that as
we got almost no interest expressed for it). Does this reflect what
others see in the field today?

944.8 | We need both and more... | VINO::LUNDGREN | John - ISB/ASAP SSE - 297-5537 | Thu Jul 18 1991 09:51 | 11 |
| Jill,
I am working on R/CMP development. We are addressing the system
management needs of the heterogeneous data center. We need support of
the DECmcc Director on ULTRIX/VAX and ULTRIX/RISC as well as SUN :-).
Maybe RISC has market share and slightly more priority should
be placed on that. However, we cannot abandon our customers who have
made an investment with ULTRIX/VAX.

944.9 | vax ultrix | TOOK::CALLANDER | MCC = My Constant Companion | Thu Oct 31 1991 09:05 | 10 |
| I requested from management an update on the "official" word, the following
is what I got:
There will be no VAX/ULTRIX kit.
We have gotten customer feedback that lead us to believe
there is little or no demand for it. If however, it can
be dhown that there is a significant opportunity lost
because of this decision, it could be reconsidered.
Hope this helps with your planning.
