859.0. "TRANSLAN AM - no such DNS attribute" by ARRODS::GILLJ (John, DTN 847-5849) Tue Apr 02 1991 08:02

    I am running DECMCC V1.1 and have recently installed the TRANSLAN AM.
    The installation and IVP were both successful, however, I am have
    problems using the AM.

    I pull up the TOOLBOX and select the TRANSLAN Icon. I enter the name
    of my bridge and select the Icon for a TRANSLAN III. I the move the
    pointer to the Map window and click MB1. I then get the following
    error message:

    The requested operation cannot be completed

    MCC Routine Error %MCC-E-NOATTRIB, no such DNS attribute

    Anyone seen this before, or have ideas as to how to get around it?

    Yes,

    I have created the directory MCC_TRANSLAN_BACKTRANSLATION in DNS; using
    the command $ MC DNS$CONTROL CREATE DIR .MCC_TRANSLAN_BACKTRANSLATION.

859.4Things to try.TOOK::MCPHERSONi'm only 5 foot one...Tue Apr 02 1991 10:2241
We need to narrow it down a bit:

    o What is the version of software you're running on the Translan ?

    o Are you using the *real* SSB version of the BMS kit? The first 1.1
      SSB kit had some 'quirks' that got fixed in the last release.

    o What is the date on the file MCC_TRANSLAN_AM.EXE ?

    o Are you having trouble registering any *other* global entities on the
      map from the toolbox? (check out by trying to put an entity on the
      map that has never been registered in DNS before.)

    o Make sure that you have the right access privileges to go
      putting things into/out of DNS.

Some other things to try:

    Sounds like the problem is when you go to DNS, so try a few commands
    from the FCL that use the Registration FM & DNS routines, e.g.
	REGISTER TRANSLAN <name>
	DIRECTORY TRANSLAN <name>
	DEREGISTER TRANSLAN <name>

    See if they give you the same error as the IMPM did.

    If the registration is successful from the FCL, then go into DNS and
    make certain that there are objects and links the appropriate
    directories.

    Also, check out interactions with the DOMAIN FM: e.g.
    	CREATE DOMAIN <domain_name>
    	CREATE DOMAIN <domain_name> MEMBER <translan_name>
    	SHOW DOMAIN <domain_name> MEMBER * ALL ATTRIBUTES
         etc
         etc

    That's all I can think of for now. Please follow up here.

859.5For the sake of a full-stopARRODS::GILLJJohn, DTN 847-5849Thu Apr 04 1991 12:5624
Doug,

Thanks for your reply.

I have managed to get things working from the Iconic map. The only thing I
am doing differently is in filling in the registration form. When I click
on the translan icon in the toolbox - an 'Add Entity' window is displayed.
I was entering the Translan name without a full-stop in front of it - this
afternoon I entered the name preceded by a full-stop - and it worked!

I believe I am running the real SSB kits - the ones pointed to in note
3.58.

I am running V6.9.7 of the translan software - which means I cannot do much
with the bridges - this software should be upgraded in the near future.

I am not having working with any other entities from the iconic map.

Thanks again,

John.

859.6Is that a *traffic* term? ;^)TOOK::MCPHERSONi&#039;m only 5 foot one...Thu Apr 04 1991 17:4325
    What is a "full stop" ? I don't know what you mean.

    When you click on the TRANSLAN icon from the toolbox you should get an
    "Add Entity" window.

    You then enter the name of the Translan you want to put on your map.

    If the Translan is not registered, then you'll get the "Add Entity -
    Entity Information" window, asking you for the Translan's ADDRESS (NOT
    optional) and some reference information (optional). Once you've typed
    in the ethernet address and hit the "OK" button (or carriage return),
    the AM will REGISTER the Translan for you. The REGISTRATION FM will
    stick the info in DNS and then try a "SHOW ALL IDENTS" to the Translan
    using the address you just gave it. If sucessful, it will put it on the
    map and you're done. If not, it will roll back the DNS stuff it did
    and send you an error message.

    If the Translan is already in your namespace (i.e. has already been
    successfully registered) then you won't see the "Add Entity" window; it
    just plunks it on your map.

859.7dot, period, take your pick!TOOK::HAOFri Apr 05 1991 10:066
    Doug,

    "Full stop" is equivalent to the American "period".
